Jones vs Stipe in 2023 is not even close to exciting as DC vs Stipe in 2018

Nope not even close. DC vs Stipe 1 was a much more exciting matchup in 2018 and will be a better fight than Jones vs Stipe in 2023.

It's still compelling because Stipe isn't a noob in the grappling department and has some tools that can show us how Jones really looks at Heavyweight.

Ultimately though he is 40, inactive and got sparked out in his last fight.

This is a shell of the Stipe that dominated the division.

Which one is more exciting? I'll leave that to the fans to decide. But I agree , there are definitely more question marks surrounding Jon Jones versus Stipe.

Personally on paper I thought DC vs Stipe was crappy too. On one end of the octagon we had Stipe who was near his career peak and the other; 40 year old obese DC who was head kicked a year prior.

I guess what goes around comes around.

damn, should've bought Bitcoin and Ether in 2018. phuk.

Just like Jones vs. DC was much bigger than DC vs. Stipe.

Fighters fall out of their prime, lose other fights and etc., so fights tend to be less interesting.

Don't really understand the point of this thread...

I love those comments which say that Stipe is a retired fighter and that it has passed a lot of time since his last fight.
Like, we will forget that Jones made a longer pause between his fights with Reyes and Gane. Do you remember - more than 3 years.

Also, I love the comments which say that Stipe looked terrible in his last fight. He fought Ngonnou who is by now probably hardest hitting guy in history of MMA. He is not fighting Tyson Fury next without reason.
In the same time, we will pretend that Jones looked great in his last two fights in the LHW division. We will forget that Reyes argubly won that fight. Also, we will forget how close was Jones' fight against Thiago Santos.

Okay, we don't know how will Stipe look in the cage with 41 years on the his back. But, by his media appereances it seems that he is in a really good shape. He wasn't retired, that's for sure. Also, we saw many fighters at his age who looked more than good.
At the same time, we also don't know how Jones will look. We cannot make a conclusion based on a half of round fight against Gane. Don't make me laugh and make a comparison bewteen Gane and Stipe. Who knows how HW Jones will look in the second round? Or, how will he look against the guy who knows how to wrestle and who hits probably a lot of harder than Gane?

To summarise, I am surprised everytime when I see how underrated Stipe is here. Sometimes I feel like Stipe was the champion by accident. He is the most succesfull HW in UFC history also by accident.
And yet, Jones gets a lot of credit in possible GOAT discussions while, in the same time, we forget how much problems he has had in his carrer and how much times have guys from the UFC "turned a blind eye" when Jones did something wrong. Okay, he is super talented and everything but would he be this what he is today without everything he used?

Oh definitely. Stipe is 41 years old, and he is fighting the GOAT, whom I think he has no chance to beat even in his prime.

I hope Jon stays around, fight other contenders and break that HW title defense record. Solidifying himself even further as the GOAT.

Jones to me is a can who’s known for being scared of Ngannou, that’ll forever loom over this apparent GOAT status for me. Comes back once Ngannou left.

Funny cause it's the better fighters fighting each other.

This is quite literally the dumbest narrative I've ever seen on Sherdog. And I've seen a lot of dumb narrative over the decades.

How tf is Jones supposed to come back against Ngannou if Ngannou refused to sign the contract to fight Jones and instead left rather than defend against him? No shit Jones can only come back against someone else.

Like Jesus Christ corn nuts.

It's 2023 and you still don't understand that DC fans are desperate to find literally anything at all that they can hold over Jones careerwise?

It's funny cause DC/Stipe only happened because Jones' suspension was ending and DC desperately needed a play to avoid having to defend against him again so moved divisions.

Because Ngannou isn’t a UFC shill that fights for peanuts, got tired of it. Fighting Fury is better imo, Fury would body bag Jones. Jones would have to resort to panic wrestling against Fury, whilst Ngannou wants to stand and bang.

Francis making good money outside of the UFC is the best thing possible for the sport right now.

It may take a while to pay off for fans and fighters but it is for the best.

Thank you for finally admitting that Jones didn't duck Ngannou.
