Media Joe Rogan doesn't think back of the head shots should be illegal

"…If you talk to a neuroscientist they say that’s a particularly vulnerable area…isn’t the temple? Aren’t the eyes? Everything is so vulnerable.”

Yeah, why should we be taking brain health advice from neuroscientists? It seems to me like somebody doesn't even know the meaning of the word "vulnerable," and I certainly don't have the self-awareness to realize it's me, so it must be them.

Btw, I remember Uriah Faber having this opinion as well, that strikes to the back of the head should be legal. His thinking were in the lines of, just don't put yourself in that vulnerable position but right now there's a lot of times you can hide away from the beating just by diverting your face kind of.

I can't wait for a super late stoppage via heavyweight GnP elbows to the back of the head tho

The sad thing is there are millions of morons that will listen to him and go hmmmm he’s right.

I mean while he’s at it, he should also advocate for no gloves, legal nut shots, headbutts, eye pokes, biting, cutting someone with sharp fingernails, I mean it’s all dangerous so just make it all legal. Fuck it.

It’s crazy that so many people listen to this guy speak on all kinds of topics like he is some sort of intellectual. MMA is something he’s supposed to be knowledgeable about and yet he consistently has some of the dumbest takes.

The amount of people who really think that they've come up with some very simple avenue of thought that all the premiere scientists on a subject haven't thought about is frankly disturbing. The fact that Joe or anyone else can posit this defense and think maybe a neuroscientist might go "Oh shit, yeah, I forgot that temples are also considered "vulnerable." Fuck, I guess he's right" is mind-boggling.

What's really wild, is you don't have to be a neuroscientist to understand that the back and especially base of the skull, is the weakest portion of the skull, you can practically feel it yourself.

The front of the skull, especially around the forehead and brow evolved to be durable, as that's where most impacts occured. The base is very weak and boxing has about 100 years of examples of what strikes to the back of the head do.

The brain stem and general “back of the head” area is quite vulnerable and potentially very dangerous.

However there are some possible arguments:

1) is it substantially more dangerous than the temples

2) isn’t it often legally hit by high kicks as they “wrap around” the head

3) does it create blatant defensive positions by allowing to just turn the head and expose its back

Still should absolutely be prohibited in my opinion, too dangerous. Perhaps however there should be points deductions for repeated blatant “unsafe” defensive positions.

Headbutts would be lit though.
