Job Interviews and thank you letters.

Do not send an email that's cheap and lazy. No offense. Type a letter, sign it, and hand mail it.

No its not. If you're dealing with a position where the person interviewing you does most of their work/communications through email then send an email. There's a lot of corporate places i've seen with lousy mailing. Meaning sometimes the hiring manager won't check her mail box for weeks since the majority of their work is done strictly through email.

Gotcha, that makes sense. Is it a research based role or advisory role?

I've spent a couple years in IB and finance in general, and seen a good share of interviews. Typically thank you notes wouldn't land you a job, but not sending one would certainly hurt you.

I think they are more advisory roles. Large funds from very wealthy people and such.

Send a thank you letter/email to each of them. Follow up in any role is always very important, and this is a good first test of your follow up abilities to get something done, ya know? Make it personal to each if you can. Copy/past the first letter, then change the personal touches...

I had a job interview with a major investment bank the other day. I actually had about five interviews with a total of ten people within the company; not including initial screening interviews.

Who do I send thank you emails to? Everyone that I interviewed with gave me a business card, but I don't know if that is just common practice or they actually want to stay in touch. Usually I only have interviews with a supervisor and then a more thorough interview with a manager etc..

Not sure if you're bragging or asking a sincere question. Investment bankers are smart people, not sure if serious.

Asking a question. I've worked mainly for gov't and such over the last ten years so this culture is new.

If I wanted to brag I would name the company and start a douchy thread like Happy Boy did.

Giving you a business card is standard.

I don't care one bit if I get a thank you card after an interview. I know they say in professional school that you should do this yada yada, but it comes across as totally contrived to me.

This. Most people don't have enough time as it is at work, let alone to read those.

I mean, most employers don't take the time to contact you when you don't get the job. Why the fuck should you take the time to send a thank you letter.

on a related topic, i'm in charge of hiring an intern for summer. honestly, anyone friendly can do the job but I can either hire a real hot piece of ass that is somewhat qualified or a not hot piece of ass who is qualified. what to do?

go with the qualified one if you look for quality
the hot one would be acceptable only if you have a boss who may disagree

I would do a follow up phone call. It's much more effective. Keep it light hearted and don't put them on the spot. Stay positive.

I landed a job this way. I didn't get the position initially. But I kept in touch every month or so. A position opened up later and I got the job right then. They didn't even interview anyone else.
