-survived Hendo‘s h-bomb and onslaught in round 1

-outstruck Prime GSP in the championship rounds and only lost a 48-47 UD despite it being mainly a striking contest.

-outstruck a green Tyron Woodley. Woodley was head coach-less though as he hadn’t teamed up with Din Thomas yet.

I think Jake’s striking was underrated honestly. It was a good idea for him to cut weight to compete at 170lbs in the UFC instead of 185lbs though. Welterweight was definitely the path of least resistance for Jake’s UFC championship pursuit back then.

Agreed. Outstriking prime GSP for 2 rounds after hurting his eye with a legal punch and surviving the H-bomb are a hell of a feather in his cap.

Hurt Robbie Lawler with body kick too.

But then....

Still I would call his striking average at best, and obviously terribly afflicted with his complete lack of explosiveness.

While augmented by his great pace and stamina and most importantly grappling threat.

It's neither underrated or overrated. K-1 Shields and K-1 Maia has been a meme for quite some time, rightfully so.

What made Shields' stand up solid was probably his understanding of distance and space, that's the explanation I've heard someone say, and I believe it, considering there is no other explanation why he wasn't getting KO'd all the time with that clumsy looking striking and striking defence he had.

Two dorks who really don't like GSP "praising" him is pretty impressive.

He poked the shit out of GSP's eyes so that invalidates his "outstriking" of GSP.

I think it's a mix of overrated and underrated.

Overrated because of people like you but underrated because he's not complete shit like other people think. He's just the prototypical BJJ guy who spams kicks because he doesn't care if his opponent takes him down.

I think it's rated right where it should be, honestly. He was never some K1-level striker, but it was functional. He got the job done well enough.

He went tad for tad in striking with gsp and could argue he had 48-47

His striking is not that bad, he just doesnt waste energy throwing so he doesnt have a lot of power most of the time. Which is smart for a grappler.
