I've been training at a small gym for a year now. A place where no one new ever shows up, and the few (like 3) other people who go there, are almost never there and aren't faithful to their training. So I'm usually the only person there besides my instructor. Which compared to me my instructor is like a brick wall, He is a bigger guy and built very solid, not to mention all the years of experience and technique advantage over me. So basically I can never do anything against him except get caught in submission after submission, mostly ones I don't even know. Whenever I ask him to teach me the escape he usually just tells me to "figure it out myself, that It's better if i do it on my own", He will say that until I have tried at least 5 times to escape something and fail. Otherwise, it feels almost impossible to break his guard at times, I can do it, but it seems that as soon as I do he is already moving to position me somewhere else. Back when there was at least one other dedicated person there, all we would do basically is all the escapes, He drilled the escapes into me so much now they're all (the ones i know) are drilled into me permanently to where they're just natural and i do them instinctively.
I know that this is a great way to learn, but another key aspect to learning is being able to grapple with someone my level, or just a little higher, where I can actually apply things better and get more experience with each technique.
Besides just grappling with him, he usually just makes me do a couple circuits to strengthen myself. Yes I do enjoy that, but we don't actually grapple til like the last 15 minutes of the hour long class...
Does this Sound like a good place to train to you, (I can even get some video footage of my training sometime)
But this is the only gym in my town and my class is only on mondays and wednesdays so only 2 days a week im training, the next closest one is a 30 minute drive away, and I don't have my license yet. So im stuck here.
any advice on how I can really improve my game, cause idk what to do at this point in time.
