I was watching sonic 3 the other day and it had occurred to me that the movies are actually pretty awesome. They aren't masterpieces by any stretch, but they are legitimately enjoyable and have been turning over a profit, with another film set to be released in 2027.

This led me down a Sega rabbit hole and it seems as if Sonic fans have been pleased with the direction the games have been going in for the first time in a LONG time. Sonic frontiers and sonic racing:cross worlds getting generally favourable reviews are solid entries

Then I read about Sega and their "super video game" strategy they are trying to employ in order to be a multi platform juggernaut, bringing back old titles like crazy taxi, jet set radio and others.

What is the general perception in the arcade here about Sega? You guys think they're experiencing some sort of golden age at the moment?

I wish they did a 2d sonic with identical gameplay to the Genesis games but with much updated graphics. That could be sick. Even remake the original game with IDENTICAL gameplay and incredible graphics.

They already did that with Sonic generations. Also you could play as new 3d sonic and old side scroller sonic.

If they came out with Genesis 2 I would certainly buy that! It would probably make record sales. young kids love the sonic movies and the older people like old console.

The sonic movies may not initially appeal to adults, but they do double up as Jim Carrey movies and these are arguably the last films he's really going to do at this point.

My little nephews love the shit out of Sonic right now and it takes a lot to pull them away from Bluey or Spiderman.

As I've read, it seems unlikely that Sega is going to go back into the hardware scene. They're set on becoming more formidable on the software side of things.

This isn't a new thing. The original xbox was Sega's arcade platform chirio. There is video of people adding more memory to an xbox to play sega chihiro arcade roms. The xbox 360 is very similar to sega's lindbergh arcade platform. The nintendo gamecube is very similar to Sega's triforce arcade platform. Sega was basically designing consoles based on or concurrently to their arcade platforms for other companies, which is ironic as they quit the console business after the Sega Dreamcast, which was a reduced ram version of their arcade platform naomi. The sega dreamcast, in a lot of ways though, was ahead of all the other consoles in terms of being able to play games online and its controller design. Sega has always be able to make good stuff , with the exception of the sega 32x and sega saturn, but they just screwed up on how to market it.

I'm not talking about their ability to build hardware but the state of Sega today. They're becoming a formidable transmedia company with more visibility and prestige than they've had in a long time.

Their movies are doing good, their games are in good condition appearently winning metacritics publisher of the year in 2024, they have legacy revival initiatives down the pipeline looking back at 40 years worth of games potentially being modernized and their "super game" initiative.

Whether or not they pull it off, they're currently very ambitious and it looks somewhat promising.

I am not sure anyone can make a super hit or "super game" on demand. Destiny thought it was this and wasn't. Gaming studios in my opinion are always in a weird precarious situation.

In this case, super game implies a class of video game not necessarily "super hit" although I'd imagine they'd want it to be a super-duper hit.
Think hyper car vs super car but for video games.

The project:
While we're still not really sure what the project will end up being, we know that it won't be a single upcoming game, but several, with Utsumi initially stating that the Super Game project will involve numerous "triple-A titles that cross over Sega’s comprehensive range of technologies," adding that they'll "go beyond the traditional framework of games". (via VGC)

The criteria:
According to Utsumi, a ‘SuperGame’ title has to meet four main criteria: “(i) multi-platform, (ii) global multi-language development, (iii) simultaneous worldwide release, and (iv) AAA titles. In other words, you can imagine that the scale of game development will be that of a global blockbuster.”

Never played it, but I was shocked to hear it was competition for Mario kart.

I'd be interested in playing it sometime.
Speaking of Sonic. Isn’t it so incredibly bizarre that Sonic 3 was not nominated for best video game adaptation to movie/tv. Just can’t fathom why it was left out. It missed the deadline last year but it qualified for 2025. Hard to take some of those awards seriously with major snubs like that

What the hell? That's bullshit!

It was a fantastic video game movie.

Me and the GF had been playing the previous Sonic Racing for a good while and then got Crossworlds recently. Its around the same quality but I'm not a fan of the plane sections myself.
