Is Khabib's leg lace a quarter guard?

More of a half-mount..

It really depends on where he is on the legs to determine what you would call it.

If he is in front of the knees, butterfly guard technically. If he is past the knees (usually is) - half mount.

Frankly speaking though - it's a very unique position that he has really made effective. So I think we can call it the "Khabib Lace"

I'd call it more or less mount really, he's past the knees and there isn't anything impeding him from moving further up the body if he chose to.

It is a great position next to the cage, since the opponent loses of the sides he could escape.

Barboza is sitting in half-guard in that image, so top-half...?

Its clearly not quarter guard/mount

The top-half has been used as a primary GnP position for quite some time, since the Couture days.

No, Khabib has his legs around both of Barboza’s. Barboza doesn’t have one of Khabib’s legs in his control.

It’s like a super low mount.

I actually love it as a mount take from certain positions. You figure 4 on their calves/ankles so that's technically butterfly, but they can't move their legs so you can just step into mount. I'd rather just call the position "low mount"

Its a low mount, but the fact that Barboza has a leg laying over the top of one of Khabib is a form of half-guard, like an open-half since ankles arent crossed.

Khabib prob utilizes a “low-mount” to take away any half-guard opportunities like going through a sweep series or fishing kimura attempts.

Crazy it's unique in mma I guess. Not that unique in grappling world

The leg lace offer mostly ground and pound opportunities. Still a little bit hard to escape, if the both knee are closer to each other it kill guard retention and scramble.
Sometime, rules and scoring system influence the style more than the fighter choices.

I don't really geek out about specific nomenclature. It's effective. That's all that really matters.
