Hello everyone,
I am 27 years old, 5'10", 150lbs and am considering to start boxing. I have been watching boxing since i was little. My Fav. Boxers are Felix Trinidad and Miguel Cotto (Im Puertorican). I am very athletic, as far as my boxing experience, I first joined a gym here in Miami when i was 18 and the first day i went in a trainer approached me and asked me if i have trained or fought Amateur before and i said no, just tried boxing with friends in the back yard after school and that i watch a lot of boxing lol. he asked me to do a sparring session with him a week later and when we were done he said "you got skills, Natural skills". I went there for about a month.

I went to the Navy after High school and got out 4 years later (22 y/o). I joined a diff. Boxing gym here in Miami at 22 y/o just for the workout and the first day i went in... the owner approached me and asked if i have fought before at any level, again i said no just trained for about a month when i was 18. I started training to box amateur there, that only lasted 2 months because i had to take on 2 jobs because my daughter was born and things were tough.

Last year i went in to take a free class at a new Boxing gym, as usual the trainer approached me and asked the same thing, If i have boxed amateur before and again i said no lol. He said i look good and at the end of the class he took my number and told me its not too late to start training for the 2012 Olympics. He called me several times but i decided not to join the gym because i have 2 daughters now and i had a f/t job and was attending school.

I am now 27 y/o and am no longer in school. I do have a f/t job though. I just joined the newly re-opened Angelo Dundee's 5th Street Gym here in Miami Beach a month ago. Like expected lol i was asked the same question my first day in. One of the trainers pulled me out of the class to do some mits training, he asked if i had ring experience and i said no. He said it seems to come to me natural.

I am considering fighting amateur and see where i go from there. I am going to have a serious talk with the trainer at 5th street gym.

In conclusion i have about 3 months of actual training time lol just wanted to hear some opinions regarding starting at such a late age. Personally i feel like i can still do something as far as a boxing career. Im Hungry, aint getting any younger and don't want to wonder "what if" for the rest of my life.

Thanks in advanced for your opinions.

No one can really answer this for you other than yourself. If you have the determination to succeed then by all means you might, if you just want play around/win a few fights then nothing can stop you from trying it out. There are plenty of successful late starts found in just about every era. Basically, asking this question is pointless in the first place because if you're willing to drop boxing simply because members of a forum told so then it wouldn't be for you to begin with.

Not really. Just don't set ridiculous expectations on yourself.. It's possible but not likely that you will be able to compete with guys that have devoted 20+ years of their life to the sport... but, you can still make money on the lower end of boxing and enjoy a great hobby that beats the fuck out of playing golf

yup...if you have the same level of discipline as Bhop...
little booze...no drugs...clean life, clean eating...it isn't too late..

Fuck...how old is Bhop?? 47? 46??

If you are asking, then the answer is probably yes. Anytime you enter into an unconventional task, you are going to receive a lot of negativity. If you can't find the answer independently, then how are you going to ignore the criticisms?

Vic Darchin started boxing when he was like 24, Bhop started boxing way late too. You can do it; go for it.

Do it.

Who's going to criticize? Your post itself is negative. Don't you see the irony in that?

Then do it. It will be harder 5 years from now. You never want to wonder what if. If it is something you're really passionate about, use that passion to make up for lost time. Life can be short and miserable friend, take every opportunity.

Ray Mercer was in his late 20s when he started. It's not impossible, but you're definitely starting at a competitive disadvantage. Best of luck!

Its like anything in life, ifyoure gonna go for it do it big. If you really want to be a boxer work your ass off and make it happen. Do whatever you gotta do,that's really the only advice I can offer. I know this is off topic hope you don't mind me asking but what was ur experience like in the navy? I've been really considering joining but I'm not too sure yet

Under normal circumstances, I would say yes it's too old to compete at the pro level. But with enough prior amateur experience, sparring, (gym-ratting) and good training...etc, MAYBE. Boxing, like anything else comes from years of honed instinct and proper habits when attacking or defending. I think you'd be better off learning some grappling and muay thai and combining THAT with your boxing to consider MMA.

That's not the point, Alanis.

People NEED outside sources of feedback. Albeit your post is an obvious example why this isn't the best place to get feedback. I didn't miss the point of your post. You missed the point of mine. My point is that your post was absurd and also happens to be extremely ironic.

No, you missed the point of mine, and then missed it again in your insistence that I missed the point of yours, which was in itself based upon a missed point. It doesn't matter whether he will receive criticism from a person, or negative feedback from a situation. If someone is entering an unconventional task, then they have to be prepared to accept that there might be very few sources of good information. How will he be able to weight information given the lack of rich empirical evidence?

Again, the point is not how much or what type of negativity he receives. It's about resilience in the face of uncertainty and weak information. That he is even asking whether it's too late is a pretty good indication that it is for him.

Sounds like you're talented. Why not, you'll be in physical prime for next 10 years. It's a long time

sergio martinez used to be a professional cyclist and football player before started boxing at a ripe age of 20. I wouldn't say it's impossible because it has been done before. You can still be competitive at 27. 27 is not a big number. george foreman won a championship at 45 yrs of age.

But I wouldn't also say that you would have it easy. IT would be harder for you compared to younger guys that has more time in this world to train and get ripe.

Without any sugar coating, remarks to that trainer who told you it's not too late to start training for the Olympics, it's a little bit ambitious. these olympic boxers have been training for years for 2012 olympics. The next one would be 2016. You might be able to join that one but very ambitious.

For a little inspiration/motivation to you, former WBA heavyweight champion James "Bonecrusher" Smith started boxing pro at the age of 28, after just a few amateur fights.

in amateurs, your first 10 fights will be against other people with less than 10 fights. you'd be competing with people from age 17 to age 35.

you've got sub-novice (under 4 fights), novice (under 10 fights), and then open (11 fights and more).

as long as you stay within the appropriate category, you should be alright.
