Is it normal that my gloves hurt my knuckles?

When i hit anything wearing my 14 oz boxing gloves, the knuckle of my middle finger starts to hurt more and more. After an hour it hurts so bad that i can only do palm strikes.

I am not hitting very hard. Usually I am hitting pads and rather train on technique, footwork and speed than on power. But without gloves my hands don't hurt at all.

Is this normal? The gloves feel right and don't hurt at all when I am just wearing them or shadow boxing. They are brand new, so perhaps it has something to do with that?

isnt the whole point of gloves ment to protect your knuckles....

I'd say you get some more gloves like hayabusa before your knuckles get badly damaged

may i ask you but what gloves have you got?

Twins Special BG5, 14 oz leather boxing gloves.

Are you wearing wraps as well? And yeah, what kind of gloves do you have?

You might have inadvertedly hurt your knuckle previously without realising - I did the same when I pulled the tendon in my thumb.

However, that kinda depends on if it's both hands and the same spot that keeps hurting?

Funny you should say that - the only other time I can recall hearing of that issue was with a training partner who was also using a new pair of those same Twins gloves.

The problem went away after a while once the gloves were broken in...but as far as I'm concerned that shouldn't happen at all. My Fairtex (and Winnings) and other gloves I've owned have all felt great from the get go.

If I were you I'd sell the Twins and pick up some Fairtex BGV1s. Since yours are still new the loss should be minimal.

Thai gloves usually are a bitch to break-in... give it 3-4 more sessions and if they still hurt, get a different pair...

do you wrap your hands??

Make sure you wrap your hands properly.

I see several beginners who don't know how to wrap.

You need to put lots of padding arounnd the knuckles.. watch the video for how to do it

YouTube - How To Wrap Hands For Muay Thai Boxing

That looks like a terrible wrap job. The guy doesn't wrap the thumb and doesn't wrap very much around the wrist. If you need padding for your knuckles, use knuckle guards that go under your wraps.

To me it sound most like constant re-injuring of a small injury.

The wrapping question is also valid - you better be wrapping! Take a break to let it heal properly or try using a knuckle guard.

i own a pair of 14oz twins too, and im not happy with them for bag work at all. i find my hands are sore after 5~ rounds of heavy bag work.

1) maybe the twins are better for sparring?
2) i probably dont wrap my hands right
3) im getting some rival bag gloves

everyones hands are different, maybe the TWINS Arent for you?

That's true in my case. My hands are long and narrow, and I have the wrists of a dainty little girl. The width of Twins gloves is great for me, but the finger compartment just isn't long enough. My fingers get cramped and my knuckles hurt like hell after a while.

Windy gloves fit very differently -- they're long enough for me, but way too wide.

Ringside gloves fit my hands best.

I am using 180" wraps, however I am not wrapping it correctly (i found that out just now). For example I am not making padding for my knuckles.

I have the same injury on both hands on the exact same spot.

funny thing about getting gloves to hit the bag soft thick sparring gloves offer the best knuckle protection but the padding wont last a year, meanwhile harder denser foams last forever but suck for absorbing shock of hitting the bag until they are finally broken in

This is a typical muay thai wrap, maybe you're using the western boxing wraps, the padding on the knuckles is just enough IMO, and secondly the wrapping around the thumbs isn't necessery in muay thai because thumbs are needed for the clinch, and secondly there is no evidence to suggest that wrapping thumbs helps prevent thumb injury.if you get your thumb in a bad positing and get it hit, you will injure it whether or not it's wrapped.

When working out, wrapping the thumb seems to promote good habits by tucking it closer to my hand. I don't know about how much physical protection it provides, but it seems to prevent me from being able to put it in the wrong spot. I'm not greatly experienced, so take me with a grain of salt - just what I've noticed with thumb wrap vs no thumb wrap.

I mean I don't make a habit of punching with my thumb out.. but... yanno. :icon_chee'

I have the same issue. I can hit all my bags just fine bare knuckle or with any of my boxing gloves, but any time I do bagwork with my UFC official fight gloves or my venum impact skintex gloves, the middle finger knuckle on both of my hands hurt a lot for a few days. i can spar and shadowbox with them and theres no problem

There are a ton of variables to consider (what kind of gloves you're using; how well your hands fit said gloves/excess space inside glove; your wrapping style and type of wrap; hardness of bag; a previous injury) but I'm going to provide the cheapest and easiest solution:

Put toilet paper or gause over your knuckles.

It's that simple. Splay your fingers and wrap around them 4-5 times (with toilet paper). Take this toilet paper, fold it in half, and put it over your knuckles then wrap with 180' Mexican Style wraps. This may be cumbersome at first so I recommend going to YouTube and watching how Thais wrap their hands. Some actually go as far as putting sponges wrapped in seran (plastic) wrap, then using that as a homemade knuckle guard. You could also buy gel knuckle guards from TITLE, but toilet paper works better.

A toilette paper is a brilliant invention, I use it daily. But not for boxing.

For boxing I would prefer Winning NG-2 knuckle guards instead of all home improvement garbage mentioned above (not meant to offend).
