To gas out during the cardio portion of class? It's my second class and this time I got seriously gassed out. Everyone was awesome about it and said that they've been in my shoes and people almost knew it was early training, but i was wondering if this was really common? I participated in most of the training but i couldn't finish the workout until it went to stretching. Any of you guys experience this?

It happens sometimes to people when they start, I wouldn't really worry about it.

Aslong as you go class consistently your cardio will get better.

I think it's a pretty common thing for people to gas during the warmup/cardio portion of training. Just train as often as you can and your body will get used to it.

Yes, especially if you're not used to a lot of physical activity. I've been goin 3 months and still gas at the beginning. It sucks, but as long as you try it shows you have commitment.

Well, not only is it common to gas because you're not used to physical activity, but also most beginners try to "muscle" every situation out, or just exert all their energy wayyy too quickly. Conserve energy, don't squirm, and relax. It all be good son.

Yes, its still common for my big ass to gas out....I never know when its coming either

Don't worry man..your just getting used to it. You'll be fine. Just push as hard as you can..the harder you push today..the easier it'll be tomorrow.

it is common to hurt your toes. watch out fo them toes!

Yeh I gas out a lot still, but I've noticed i don't get dizzy or feel like I'm going to throw up anymore. I also recover a lot quicker when I do gas out, so I'm spending a lot more time actually rolling now.

^^Funnily enough I broke my little toe last night.

I have returned to Judo after a long hiatus due to injury and I had forgotten how difficult it is. I gas out in the workouts, my hips hurt when I play guard, my fingers ache for days after and the skin is ripped off because I have lost my calluses on the top of my fingers.

Rest assured if you stick with it, your fitness will improve so much that everything you find impossible now will be run of the mill.

my 1st couple of rolls was the shocker; i didn't realise how cardio intensive grappling was... strangely

I soon learnt to pace myself, that's for sure.

I get so tired from doing burpees but I rarely completely gas out while rolling, I think it all depends on who you are

Man all this talk about Burpees we must be the only school that doesn't do those for warm ups.

And yes you gas out completely the first few months...we do 4- 7 minute rounds for sparring and the first 2 months by round 2 I was just trying to hold on to survive. Now after the 4th round I sometimes stay after class for rounds 5 and 6. Just takes time to get your body used to breathing/staying calm/ and building that bigger gas tank.

it's entirely normal, don't worry about it. just do everything you can do, if you can't keep pace with everyone else, don't stop, just slow down and try to go longer next time.

Yeah man, after 2 months I still gas out occasionally on the warm-ups (and when rolling) although it has been getting much better. I am still pretty damn worn out immediately afterwards even if I don't completely gas out. I am a bigger guy (I range from 200-215) I am slightly overweight with a nice spare tire, but a decent amount of muscle thrown in. Here are some tips that have helped me some this past month:

1. Try and do some low impact cardio work on your off-days. I prefer interval training over steady state.

2. Make sure to get a meal in a couple of hours before class. I used to be worried about my stomach, but about a minute into my warm ups any stomach problems I may be having go away. When I first started I would just have a protein shake before class, but I find that I gas less when I have actually had a full meal.

3. This may be a no brainer, but I was smoking, but only a couple of cigs a day. Even cutting that small amount out made a huge difference.

4. I used to really gas when mounted trying to use my strength to escape. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Didn't matter because I was too tired to do anything after that point. Focusing on technique allows me to last longer when rolling. Before I would have a lot of trouble lasting 2 consecutive 5 minute rounds, now I have trouble going 4 consecutive (hey... it's a start).

5. Remember to breath!

And dammit, my toes hurt like hell! I think I have minor turf toe on my left foot. :icon_evil

Breaking a sweat and breathing hard during warmups, yes.

"Gassing out" during warmups, no. Gassing out basically means you're exhausted to the point where you're gasping for air, you're so weak you can barely continue training, and probably kind of feel like you're gonna puke. It's like the feeling you get after a few good hard wind sprints. If you're gassing out during warmups, your instructor is doing one hell of a warmup or you're in really terrible shape. But you're in luck, the way to get better at it is just to keep training.
