PlayStation Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet

I just rewatched these movies before watching Romulous. Ripley spends most of the movie calling everyone a fucking idiot and telling them they are wrong. She is right most of the time. In the first movie she literally becomes the boss at one point and overrides the other boss telling him to fuck off he needs to stay outside the ship. Only the AI overrides her and she's fucking pissed about it (rightfully so).
Ripley is an amazing character, especially in Aliens. She and Hicks play off each other so well. Newt lets her show her nurturing side too. It's magic.

Alien 3 is a good film, but it's always ruined by the suits at Fox killing Hicks and Newt off screen. They did the same thing with Dr Shaw in Covenant, though the blame is on Ridley Scott for that. She could have been the next Ripley.

Naughty dog hasn't done anything since new since like 2005.

Uncharted and TLOU remasters and remakes out the ass the last 6 years.

Also didn't like TLOU2 personally.

I've lost faith in them.

This is expected from a game studio that has worked on the same two IP's for twenty years. Their game portfolio is quite narrow while not experimenting/straying into other gameplay mechanics and genres. Future path as a game studio is dependent on how well received this game is.

Thats not the best breakdown. Ripley wouldnt open the doors because she was following quarantine procedures. She didnt tell anyone to fuck off, and she was obviously stressed/worried about the situation but wanted to follow protocol. This isnt really a girlboss thing. A woman being right isnt girlbossing.

At the end of the day, Ripley is a well written compelling character that usually makes the right decision and overcomes struggles and adversity. Whereas girlbosses tend to just be the best at everything and the struggle for them to overcome is usually small or insignificant. Ripley triumphed over tremendous adversity, and always by the skin of her teeth (when the movie was good), and more than once had to rely on others. Girlbosses are just the best at everything.

Ive already said, Im going a wait and see approach since we saw so little. I get being turned off by the whole smug, flippant demeanor and its something we've seen so many times already. Depending on the vibe of their gameworld it either wont matter or itll be a huge misstep. Guardians of the Galaxy style? Who care? If they want to have any sort of dramatic weight, this is probably not the best decision. But, again, only time is gonna tell.

It wasn't meant to be a literal breakdown of what happened. It was a quick summary for everyone who's already watched the movie and remembers one of the most critical scenes in it. I know exactly why she did it, which is why I added she is right most of the time. I guess we have different definitions of girl boss because that's exactly what it is to me. I just don't always see girlboss as some negative thing. It can be done well.

For instance Michelle Rodriguez does the girl boss thing a lot and IMO she is horrible at it. She isn't a good actor and most of time she does well enough to not ruin the movie and that's about it.

The way you describe girl boss just seems like a poorly written character in general.

This is what I plan on doing and what I've always done. Not a huge fan of CGI only trailers as it is but it was just nice to see ND had a new IP coming and that it's been in the works since 2020. Also sci-fi which I love.

Oh, I agree, thats more or less exactly what makes a girlboss. Poor writing and conception. Depending on the medium its fine, but the more seriously the creator wants people to take the character/story, the less it works.

They did the same thing with Dr Shaw in Covenant, though the blame is on Ridley Scott for that. She could have been the next Ripley.

I unironically love Prometheus was was greatly looking forward to Covenant, and Fox studios even released promotional material strongly implying Shaw would still have a major role.

And the movie basically fell apart without her presence, instead of focusing strictly on David. All it would have taken is a five minute flashback explaining how & why he killed her.

Not saying killing Shaw wouldn't have been the best move, but not showing it and leaving it ambiguous after having her in promotional materials was very off-putting and the movie never recovered from it.

They don’t have to look like anything except what the artists who design them want them to look like.

sure their choice to make the character designs god awful or awesome. But we consumers will whip out our wallets on what we like

Artists create 'beauty' from their perspective. 'Beauty' is extremely subjective.
And if that is what they consider to be 'beauty' then that speaks so much of their subjective perspective.

It also speaks of their subjective perspective of quality gameplay and storytelling.

Edit - Just saw this. Perfectly sums up my point.

Beauty is subjective but it’s also not the only thing creators think about when making characters. It’s entirely possible they just wanted to create a more realistic looking character that fits the setting. She’s a bounty hunter and she’s in space. Being bald makes sense in that it’s low maintenance and gives your opponent less stuff to grab in a fight. I would actually like to see more characters that fit their setting. If there’s any criticism I have of Hollywood it’s that characters look way too clean even when the they’re put in situations where they shouldn’t be

If thats the argument then all characters in 'realistic' games should be ugly.

Joel from TLoU was in his mid-50s and was quite handsome and rugged, but since it was 20 years into a zombie apocalypse with meager means of water and food he should have been much uglier.
And if you really want to go further down the 'realistic' route there should have been a few dialogue lines of how badly Joel smelled since they couldn't shower regularly, and that Ellie would be in need of tampons.

And speaking as a bald guy, it's the most convenient hair style for anyone to have regardless of gravity. So, regardless of sex or situation, anyone can be bald in a videogame.
So why aren't there more bald characters?

You’re taking it to the extreme now. Tampons? I just think we’re already in a good spot. We have games with more normal looking people and plenty of the gooner stuff you like. I see you complain about this stuff all the time but like why are you obsessed with conquering the industry? Like you said there’s very few bald characters so just let them design the way they want to. The culture warriors demand that every female looks exactly the same. Don’t you think that would get boring? I played stellar blade and I’ll play this. Ultimately I just care about gameplay and story

Is it taking it to the extreme? Or just realistic?

Yes, in a future with female bounty hunters traveling from planet to planet, they'd rather shave their heads than use hairspray.

Swing and a miss, especially after the headlines of female gamers preferring beautiful female characters.

So the whole 'you just want hot female characters so you can jerk off to them' is a narrative just meant to character assassinate your opposition on the subject and virtue signal 'I'm fine with uglifying female characters because I don't jerk off to them.'

Reality Check - People like looking at beautiful things and people.

Like you said there’s very few bald characters so just let them design the way they want to.

Nobody was complaining about Jack in ME2, because she was a well-developed character and her story provided an interesting commentary on trauma.

I'm very supportive of NaughtyDog designing the characters the way they want to.
And I also have the right to criticize them for it.

Come on bro, you're smarter than this.
Come up with a better argument than 'Everyone who disagrees with me wants to make female characters look the same.'

You're acting like being bald automatically makes you ugly. Both the character you posted and the actress that plays this new character are not even ugly. Women look different when they have very short hair, even the pretty ones. In fact, the ones who can still look halfway decent while being bald are actually stunners when they do grow out their hair. I swear some dudes just don't spend time around real women lol. I mean haven't you even seen a woman put her hair up when she doesn't want to get it wet in the shower? They look very different but I wouldn't say they are ugly.

It's also a bit weird you're bringing up character development as a defense for the other bald character. We still don't know anything about this new Naughty Dog game or any of the characters. For all we know she could be an awesome character. In the Last of Us 2 everyone was saying Abby was trans and it turned out that she wasn't. This is another situation of people overreacting. It's just kind of tiring at this point, instead of working yourself up in a frenzy you could just wait until you actually get your hands on the game. It's why I avoided all the spoiler talk before TLOU 2 came out. I just wanted to go into it and form my own opinion.

I posted Jack from ME2, so that obviously isn't true.

'Not even ugly' is a very subjective perspective.
But there has been a social movement within the games industry to... not make women so beautiful, to the 'male guise.'

Don't pretend to be ignorant about Neil Drunkman being an outspoken supporters of Anita Sarkessian.

It's also a bit weird you're bringing up character development as a defense for the other bald character.
No, it's to display that just because a female character is bald doesn't mean they're ugly.
But the times change and 15 years ago there wasn't social politics being promoted within gaming.

Abby was ridiculous.
25+ years into a zombie apocalypse, where food is obviously scarce, a woman is able to develop and sustain the physique of a powerlifter/crossfit athlete.... without steroids.

And those who were looking forward to a follow-up to TLoU had to watch the main protagonist of the first game be sadistically murdered, play half the game as his murder, supposed to feel empathy for the murderer, all in the service of a 'revenge is bad' narrative.

Ellie is mostly still well-liked due to her being so loved in the first game, so Abby takes most of the backlash as a character.

What kind of character and traits were you looking for in a female space bounty hunter? Model thin tall and beautiful with a sensual soft voice? Perhaps Naughty Dog can ask Shift Up to borrow one of their Stellar Bladee character for a cross over teamup?

My point is the job is space bounty hunter. In my head its not a job for the wealthy and beautiful. You're practically a space pirate out there. Realistically speaking the last thing a female space bounty hunter would care about is how they would look. That is also why I didn't see anything wrong with the Jedi outlaw game on how the main female character was portrayed. That's how I would picture space pirates to look like. A solo space bounty hunter? You're not a girl boss. You're a boss in general.
"A pirate would not care how they looked"

It's not even about being ugly or attractive. It's more about what it (potentially) symbolizes.

Like I said before, I'll give it a wait and see. But the apprehension isn't created out of nothing, and it isn't due to sexism. Druckman is not an unknown commodity without any previous work to draw inferences from. He had moved to being super political and outspoken and people would argue that they see a correlation between his political views and narrative choices that they would disagree with. Lets not rehash this argument, since we know what it is, let's just accept that the position exists for some.

With that in mind, it's not exactly far fetched that her look and demeanor is another example of this same sort of perceived politically minded narrative choice. If, again, IF, that is whats happening, then her look and even the bald head aren't just simple design choices. They're gonna be either statements or parallels to contemporary issues.

Again, we'll see. Theres still 99% of this character and game that we don't know about. But there are actually reasons that this has made people apprehensive that are not simply sexism or ugly women or a bald head. If the issues that are prevalent to these people aren't important to you, thats fine. I think thats probably gonna be the same for a large amount of people, even if the game is super preachy. But to many these are real issues that would lessen or even outright kill enjoyment of a game they'd rather be looking forward to.
