i was googling different types of keyboards currently on the market, and came across the following stat: less than twenty percent of people can touch type (type without looking at the keyboard) fluently. for some reason i was under the assumption all students were taught mandatory typing given how important computers are today. or am i so damn old now that this is an obvious fact lol.

I think I took typing in grade 8. I'm currently in grade 43.

I can mostly touch type, but not with the greatest of accuracy. I'll glance at the keyboard every few seconds to make sure I'm on track.

Granted law enforcement isn't a field where touch typing is a prerequisite.

lol. i took typing at grade 9. it could be because i grew up in the s.f. bay area that the school emphasized it. who knows.

Young people aren't even on computers anymore. 24/7 glued to the smartphone screen, or the tablet if they're feeling fancy. They have no clue how to use computers and troubleshoot problems when they arise because apps are largely idiot-proof and they never had to. Zero tech problem solving skills like earlier gens. Can't type, can barely write with a pencil. Sad bunch of people. Literally, huge rates of mental illness on top of being useless at everything.

The smartest guy I work with is the worst typist I've ever seen. I have to walk out of his office when he starts typing because I get anxiety watching him go through a 12 round boxing match just to type an email with two sentences in it. Him trying to type "Hey" looks something like this.

Not everyone is "Mavis Beacon teaches typing" trained, this is true.

ok, so serious question: in high school when students turn in reports or whatever, are they writing out essays or are they finding sites online as references, etc.?

I'm not allowed within 500ft of any high school students so I can't comment.

I didn't start using computers fluently until I was an adult. I taught myself to type correctly instead punching the keyboard buttons with my fingers 😆
