Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, his wife and brother-in-law are the subject of a federal criminal investigation arising from property tax breaks on a Pritzker mansion in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood, WBEZ reports.

A 2018 Cook County Inspector General investigation found now-Illinois First Lady M.K. Pritzker directed workers to remove toilets from the mansion in order to declare it uninhabitable, which resulted in more than $331,000 in property tax breaks.

According to WBEZ, the county watchdog said all of that amounted to a “scheme to defraud” taxpayers out of more than $331,000.

When the story broke during the campaign, Pritzker pledged to repay the amount of money he saved. Many of us found that ridiculous. Why is the punishment of the crime merely to give back what you got caught stealing? A federal law enforcement source confirms that there is an active investigation aside from the state one that merely let him pay back the frauded amount and then let it go.

I really wish the toilet scandal would have broken during the primary, as I was a big supporter of his opponent. But it was obvious that nothing short of a murder on camera would tank anyone against Rauner. He was the most unpopular governor in the state. He fatefully crossed his Republican voters by....following through on exactly what he said he was going to do: busting unions, cutting taxes for billionaires and millionaires, removing restrictions on capital, withholding benefits to public workers, and generally looting the public sector. It became quite clear halfway through his term that Illinois Republicans were only Republicans on the basis of social issues (which Rauner was never particularly passionate about).
