I'm not a boxing expert in anyway, but Manny used to be a Muay Thai fighter when he was younger (not well documented but he was), that's how he got his southpaw stance converted it into a natural boxing stance, but naturally he IS right-handed.

So my question is for the boxing experts: How would Manny do if he actually do if he fought right-handed instead of southpaw. Would have he had the same success or not? I know fighting right-handed fighters when your southpaw has it's advantages.

Opinions???

YouTube - Manny Pacquiao showcases his Orthodox Stance

Here's a video of Pac hitting the mitts with Freddie in the orthodox stance but he's not as quick or sharp as he is when he's southpaw. Still crazy fast though.

It would be interesting to see him lead with the left because that's his best hand, but I don't think the straight right would be nearly as devastating as the straight left, which might be the most feared punch in boxing and keeps every opponent honest.

If Pac is truly right handed that's funny because he used to have no good right jab or hook, and just relied almost entirely on his straight left. Whereas guys like Cotto and DLH who are naturally left handed but stand orthodox, have excellent jabs and left hooks.

Heres videos of him right-handed:

only thing he doesn't do right-handed is box and play pool.

manny is ambidextrous.. can use both hands. more controlled right but a more powerful left.. he writes, play dart, throws a baseball with his right..IMO this is one of the reasons why he is unpredictable..

Being left handed can be considered pretty taboo amongst Filipinos from an older generation and there was a time when parents converted their kids to right handedness when they were really young. Conversion usually involved a length of bamboo.

i thought manny never did muay thai except for some filipino reality show.i mean he turned pro at like 16

no he never did.

squash that thought right now before it gets out of hand.

I'm sure he could and would be pretty good with it but it wouldn't really mesh with his style. That would give him a power jab which while he could of course use, wouldn't be as effective as his cross is now for putting people down.

#1 question that comes to mind in rading the thread topic: Why?

I'm guessing TS just finished watching Rocky 2 and thinks that switching stances is actually a good idea.

My brother writes with his left and throws with his right.. some people are weird like that

Fiction: Manny was a Muay Thai fighter before.

Fact: Manny was in a reality show filmed in Thailand, sort of like Fear Factor, where he had challenges like doing Muay Thai and eating insects.

Photos can always be taken out of context.

Can someone explain to me: Why would a right handed muay thai stand in the southpaw stance anyway (assume that he's left footed also)?

In boxing it's very simple: If you're left handed and stand in the orthdox stance, you want to train you right cross and overhand right all the time. If you stand in the southpaw stance, you want to train your right jab and right hook.

But in muay thai it's deadly to expose your strong foot.

being ambidextrous is not as hard as you think. I'm a web designer and for a while my hands hurt so bad I had to switch hands to use my mouse. After only a few months I was able to make as precise designs using my left as my right. Of course fighting is different but you get where I'm going.
