*also really fun to see a female commentator on the first UFC.
* Amazing how MMA is a baby, This "sport" started in 1993.
*strange to see UFC without Buffer.
*ironic how no one knew anything about BJJ, everyone was easy prey for Royce Gracie.
*First Ultimate Fighter fought 3 times on a non-stop night, Also won every fight without throwing punches.
*was very badass to see style vs style like Savate vs Sumo, Karate vs Kenpo Karate, BJJ vs Boxing.

I really had forgotten how fun ufc 1 was, I don't think anyone would have imagined how successful the UFC would be.

Gracie family created the UFC to be an advertisement for them, to prove that jiu jitsu is the superior martial art.

but today the UFC has become something giant, A Colossal Event.

I also watched the first 3 recently and all I could think about was how much I wish we could do one of these with modern fighters

I wish that like every 4 years they would have a huge prize and do a tournament with the old-school rules , the old logos and the multiple fights in a night and zero drug testing. I think it would be cool to see who would win. I also think it would be fun to see which guys would totally go Savage and which guys would still fight like gentlemen.

If it happened right this second who do you think would win? Would it be a roided and coked to the gills Jones? Could big frank blast through 4 dudes and not have cardio issues ? Would some dude like Marty or Colby show up a bit heavy and be able to out cardio the big guys?

It's seriously my biggest mma wish

If you think UFC 1 is fun, you should rewatch UFC 2 and UFC 3. They are the pinnacle of UFC entertainment for me. Pat Smith going apeshit, Ninjacop Steve Jennum, Harold Howard defeating Gracie and Kimo coming back to the Octagon to praise the lord for it, Emmanuel Yarborough, Ken Shamrock saying he learned new Gi techniques (which consisted of grabbing Leininger by the lapel and bashing him in the face with his fist, lol), Fred Ettish getting brutalized, Remco Pardoel delivering Goodridge level elbows to a kickboxer and best of all: Bill Wallace is gone from commentary.

When did Harold Howard defeat Gracie? What are you talking about?

Actually UFC 4 is quite awesome too. The debut of Severn, the infamous Hackney/Joe Son ball-punching incident….Royce armbarring hackney, Severn duplex into the shit out of Anthony Macias, and (I think) the first Triangle choke in UFC history.
The triangle choke is debatable. There was the Jason DeLucia one at UFC 2, but one could argue it was submission by punches from a triangle position.

Youtube has a heap of the original UFCs you can watch in order. I went and rewatched a heap ages ago.
I still enjoy mma but around the time of BJ Penn, Chuck Liddell and Matt Hughes was the best. There was still that skill gap that made the fights exciting.
I love what MMA has become, but early UFC (and Pride) was amazing.

I feel that if you want to expose The UFC to someone who isn’t familiar with MMA, show them UFC 1, 2, or 4. They are riveting in a “Bloodsport” kind of way.

it’s also amazing to see the smallest guy win with holds.

Yup UFC 1 - 22 is so awesome, After 22 is gets really crappy, until around UFC 40.

Everything is much bigger and better and badder. If you want to watch old events, then I suggest UFC 3, UFC 5, UFC 6, UFC 8, UFC Ultimate Ultimate 95, UFC Ultimate Ultimate 96, UFC Ultimate Brazil , UFC 18, UFC 22. All great events

Via corner stoppage by towel throw. Same way Sakuraba beat Royce Gracie.
I'm afraid you 'misremembed' what happened.
This is found under the UFC 3 bracket........
"Royce Gracie's corner threw in the towel BEFORE the fight so Harold Howard was given a BYE into the final."
I've used capital letters to make the sentence a little easier to understand.

In fight 1, he gets round house kicked to the head on the ground, teeth knocked out, TKO'd. Ref stops the fight to give him some time to freshen up and get back in there. After over a minute of trying to get him back into the fight, they call it, and Gordeau wins by TKO. What a stark contrast to how a fight gets finished in today's version of the sport.

Wikipedia is wrong. Apart from it being explicitly stated in the event that Harold Howard has won, both Gracie and Howard got paid for the fight (other than Shamrock for instance, who did not walk out to the final and therefore did not lose but got replaced).

Even the wikipedia article states "Competitors could only win a match by submission, throwing in the towel, knockout, or referee stoppage.". If there as no fight, there would not be a towel throw necessary.

Fun fact by the way: The original UFC technically had rounds, but no fight would make it to a second round.
