I think I've figured out Stipe's angle for fighting again

He doesn't want to fight Francis again and he's hoping that either Gane/Lewis or Jones would beat Francis so that he could take what he thought was a less dangerous fight to get the title back

He was talking about bulking back up to 245 and not being worried about a third fight but I knew it was going to be a very long time if at all before we saw Stipe walk into the octagon again. There's no way Stipe is beating Francis again and he knows it

Stipe's ultimate plan was to hopefully fight someone other than Francis in an attempt to win the title back and immediately retire. A lot of fans were calling Stipe the GOAT over Fedor but as soon as Francis beat him they went silent

No way Stipe beats Ngannou? As in, like, Ngannou would be a -1200 favorite?

You're insane. You think Stipe is a coward? Ngannou would be a favorite. Maybe -225. Stipe is a dangerous fight for anyone.

Otherwise, cool story.

hei don't you know how statistical generalization works ? we infer results from a sample of one, then generalize and apply them to the whole population... lol

Some people actually do this. It's ridiculous, lol.

No way stipe wants any part of Ngannou or Gane. He knows he gets soundly beaten if not tombstoned by Frank. Jones is the fight to make and its winnable for stipe thats why he accepted. Jones not interested yet again. Stipe never goat. Thats hilarious. You dont get ktfo by an old LHW and claim goatness.

Stipe beat DC twice after losing to him. He beat JDS after losing to him. He's capable of coming back and beating Ngannou. If he says in interviews that he wants a rematch, there is no reason to doubt him.

I mean he’s closing in on 40 now and his last fight wasn’t particularly competitive . so there’s some reason to doubt him…

Literal quote from GSP on Whittaker:

"I want to defend my mw title again and it has to be against Robert Whittaker"

Stipe said the same thing about the Daniel Cormier fight after getting knocked out in 1 round

Fought him 2x in a row, both times victorious. You can't compare it to GSP. Stipe never would have said "i have to defend my title against (specific fighter)". A rematch scenario is much different than a standard title defense

Yeah and it’s not even anything against Stipe, he is older and the division has passed him by.
Stipe was forgettable to begin with and barely fought… i legit only remembered he existed whenever his fights were coming up.. much worse now that he’s lost a step or two..

As much as I respect Stipe's title reign, opponents who are quick and durable tend to be very troublesome for him in general.

Those DC fights prolly took years off his career and he took a lot of damage from them.

Ngannou flat out KOing Stipe and landing the bomb after didnt help much for Stipe's chin either.

Gane? Long, rangy, but even quicker and mobile than Cormier who gave Stipe all he could handle so this one's hardly favorable for Stipe either. Could be a worse version of the Stipe vs Overeem fight with Stipe getting outstruck without him even getting the chance to do anything.

Thank you DC. You prolly made Stipe's road back to the title pretty much impossible for him now.

You are really overthinking this. Far from plotting out "angles," all Stipe's focusing on right now is the imminent birth of his son. That was a constant theme in his recent interview on Chris Weidman's podcast — "I'm not going to worry about it because that's just stress I don't need in my life right now 'specially with the baby coming up."
