I had a crazy idea...thinking about buying a used Tahoe Police SUV.

I own two hybrids. Was thinking of trading one in for a new hybrid or electric car next year. Then...I started looking at SUVs. Then I saw these used Police Tahoe's. Add a new sound system. Ultimate beater. Most come with windows tinted. Some come with custom storage cabinets in the rear. All of them come pre-wired for remote start. Some have Onstar built-in.

Drive it occasionally for 3-4 years, have it moving big shit. I'm sure I can find someone to buy it, when I come to my senses. They look so mean.

Pricing is between $14,000 - $25,000 depending whether its a 4x2 or 4x4 and years are between 2014-2017 for most. Mileage is between 70,000 and 89,000. I'm seen at least one with only 14 miles! Almost all were owned by state governments. I'm reading reviews and people are able to put 100,000 extra miles on this bitches.

TALK ME OUT OF THIS SHIT. LOL MY WIFE IS GOING TO FREAK IF I BRING ONE OF THESE HOME. LOL

There's a dude around here who drives some beat up old ex-police car that's like 3 days away from retirement but it still makes me shit my pants and slow down every time I see it. Don't be that guy. Although these Tahoe's are quite nice tbh

I found a place in South Carolina that sells Tahoes previously used by State government, not police or sheriffs so the chance they were ran hard is pretty low. They have incredibly high reviews.

They completely clean the interiors, detail the engines. take the body panels off and repaint them and take out the major dings. They make sure every vehicle can pass inspections. Maybe the only problem I'd have it the tint. But, if I go to the right DMV, I should be fine. 'Cause this deserves full dark as night tints all the way around.

I hate Crown Vics, they scream redneck. But this I can haul shit in. I can drive it for fun and get a kick out of people slowing down when I drive by. LOL As an aside, I like the ones with spotlights and it looks like many of them still have the emergency LED lights still installed, just disconnected. (I wonder what kind of trouble I could get in if I reconnected them?)

Even I bought one for $15,000 and drove it for 4 years, I could still get $7-9,000 back in resale later on. There's always some crazy guy who wants an ex-law enforcement vehicle. The best part is that it tough and looks bad ass when it's clean and dirty.
 
Are you buying from the government, or are you buying from a dealer who bought it from the government? If its now second hand, and still below non-police used retail then its got issues.



I shopped the government auctions here in Los Angeles for a few years. There's a fair amount of competition at the auctions and the SUVs sold almost near retail (-10-20%) while the sedans were sold cheap. You have to know what you are looking at if you are going to bid on a used police vehicle, its true they get beat hard while in use. They probably wont let you drive it, so test the transmission for slippage while on the brakes.

If you can arrange an extended warranty on a former fleet vehicle, do it. Most of the pristine examples get bought by people with dealer licenses.

I definitely like the idea that parking it in front of my house will instantly change how people drive. LOL

I would buy from a dealer. I've bought cars from auctions before and didn't enjoy the experience. Rather than battle to save a few bucks, I'd rather buy from a reputable dealer who specializes in these vehicles. An extended warranty seems like a good idea.

I'm obviously having a late mid-life crisis. I've been trying to decide if I was going to buy another clean energy vehicle, then started looking at Camaros LZ1s and decided the extra static it would create with the wife wasn't worth it. Now I'm looking at these. LOL. I figure this is so cheap, I can own it for a few years without trading anything in, still end up replacing one of the hybrids later on. I would really like something to haul shit in and something that I don't pissed with people ding it. If this got a thousand dings, I could still resell it and I'd still enjoy owning it.
 
Cool, but buy it in black as it's gonna be more explosive and athletic.

I drive a 2018 Camaro (admittedly not the LZ1), and while it looks cool, it is worthless as a daily driver. I can't fit anything inside, and the back two seats are basically just for show - my 5'2 mother can't even get inside. Don't get me wrong, it's a tonne of fun to drive, but the Tahoe has both the beauty and the utility - it is legitimately an awesome all round car.
 
I had a friend who bought one,but factored in the cost of putting in a new engine. You have to remember in addition to actual road miles, these things are left running all day long without a break. They also have a very spartan interior, and will have the center consoles removed, and random hoes from cut out. That said, they also have highly upgraded alternators and electronics, and much larger heavy duty brakes.
 
Dude we abuse the fuck out of our cars. You dont want a police unit for purchase.

This man knows what’s up. When I take the fire engine for fuel, our public works garage is a literal junk yard of cop cars being parted out for the ones currently in for servicing. And there’s no need to go easy because they budget for new cars every year. I find it amazing that the town isn’t that large or a huge crime area, but they continually find ways to wreck their squad cars.
 
The vehicle I really really wanted to buy was a used Fire Department ambulance. Well, that and diesel F4/550 ($6k). The ambulances had ~130k on the clock, had spotless bodies, and would make the perfect work vehicle. Complete with workbenches, cubbies, 110 volts, etc. They had like 5 of em at one auction, and I figured I'd wait until the next one for more cash. After that they only got used private ambulances which looked like stuff out of a 70's horror movie. The one downside with the fire dept ones was they literally hacked out the accessory wiring. It would have taken months to rewire the existing switches.

You're not hearing me. I'm looking at ones driven by administrators and supervisors for state government. They replace most of the center consoles and take out most of the equipment specific stuff, like laptop stands. Although a few do still have these.
