I guess the precedent for a title shot has changed.

Sonnen gets a title shot coming off a loss and now Nick Diaz.

Im a Sonnen fan but I dont agree with him fighting Bones. Hendo should be fighting him.

Hendricks should be fighting GSP.

They earned it.

So I guess the new precedent is whoever the UFC wants to fight for the title will.

I just dont like this at all.

Maybe the loser of Shogun/Gus can fight Bones.

Technically, Diaz earned his shot before Big Rig Hendricks. Then GSP got injured, if I recall correctly.

They re-activated his title shot.

no, it hasn't. you're just so knew you don't realize it's always been this way.

Really. Because he had a title shot against condit and lost, so I guess he gets two title shots.

As far as Diaz I agree. He's had two chances at a title shot and screwed both of them up. As far as Sonnen, you should stop your whining. Hendo's hurt and all the other guys were offered Jones before Sonnen was and they chickened out.

It's a shame that the UFC is steadily heading in the same direction that Boxing has over the years. The true #1 contender, or fighter that has "earned" a title shot rarely gets it when he should, instead, it goes to the fighter who the company feels is most marketable, or will sell the most tickets. Before you know it, you'll start hearing accusations for fighters taking falls, and fixed fights.

Ok. Sonnen was willing to do the UFC a solid by steppinhg up on short notice also, so that is a little more understandable, but Diaz should have to win first.

yep :)

here's my 5 second spiel; ~95% of the time, the title shot by merit and the big money fight are one and the same, and some people fool themselves into thinking that all title fights are given by merit.

but any hypothesis that is only correct 95% of the time is, by definition, incomplete.

it's always the money fight. that means that ~95% of the time it's given to the same person who would have deserved it IF it were by merit, and also the other 5% of the time. QED.

Dear new fans:

Randy Couture got a HW title shot after having two losses in a row at HW.

TWO.

Some people complained, and then we got one of the most exciting HW title fights of all time.

how did he earn it? he bailed on the conference to his last title shot... then he lost to condit. how does that means he earned it. he should at least fight hendricks or something first. I have no problem with it, but i done see why the same people who complained about chaels instant title shot love the idea of diaz' instant shot

Yeah but at the time the HW division did not have a #1 contender waiting in the wings like Hendricks. That is not exactly the same. Plus the UFC HW division sucked then.

And then Chuck was like, "Give me Jeremy Horn..."

That was for the title right?

Shieeet, Rashad Evans was #1 contender like 4 times before fighting Jones, lol

That shit don't mean nothing

Takedown, elbow, elbow, Diaz is dripping with blood 2 minutes in, third round doctor stoppag but won't prevent them from somehow trying to sell a rematch...

and his most recent fight was a loss at LHW and he was retired at the time.

yes, this is the most extreme example of title shots not granted solely by merit.

I repeat, Couture was handed a title shot after two losses in a row in the division.

Meanwhile, Diaz just had one controversial decision for the interim belt.

More importantly, Couture (at the time) and Diaz (now) are fighters the fans want to see fight the champ. The fight makes perfect sense.
