So I walked outside yesterday and I see this all white American Bulldog. I think it might be pure but it kinda has a bit of a pit look to it. Either way..I can see that it is VERY skinny and has been on the streets for awhile. So I whistle to it...and surprisingly enough it starts walking straight towards me. (my first reaction is to cup my balls in my hand)...but as it get's about a meter away I can sense that it's just desperate and not rabid or aggressive. So I run inside...grab some roast beef, a bowl of water, and a dog leash and go back to the front where this fucker is literally sitting on my porch waiting for me!

So he destroys the roast beef, and sits there drinking water for a good minute. I walk back inside to get a big bowl of dog food...and he eats it so fast he starts throwing it up. NEWAYS...as this is happening..I notice his left eye is fucked up. Either infection or he had owners that whooped his ass. So I wait for him to finish eating...and I make a noose with the leash and as soon as I put it over his neck he immediately starts heeling PERFECTLY. No drag, no pull. Like the dog was obviously well trained. I bring him inside and I notice more injuries and such. He's also kinda skitish. But I shit you not as soon as soon as I took a knee to look under his belly for anything remarkable he sit's down and tries to shake my hand. So I tell him to lay down. Boom. Like nothing. Sit, shake. Dog is a perfectly trained well tempered dog.

BUT the eye things really freaks out. I'm worried maybe he was abused by his owner...even thought that conflicts with how well mannered he is. I called the vet and they said they will have to scan him for a chip and obviously if he has one they have to contact the owners. So now I'm torn as what to do. I just want to do whats best for the dog. I could keep him and give him a great life. (He already met my GS and they get along great). I checked craigslist, and checked the online newspaper here in town and there's no ad looking for him. What do I do sherbros? Do I risk getting him scanned and him going back to a shitty house? Or is it not fair for me to assume his injuries are from his owner? Maybe there's a family crying for his loss as we speak. But again..no collar...no ads on craigslist. Here's a pic of the sweet fella. Discuss.

edit (sorry about formatting)

This. My dog almost never has her collar on, if by some fluke, she managed to go missing we'd likely be depending on that chip and a good samaritan like yourself to help bring her back to us.

Damn...see...now this post got me conflicted again. lol. ARGGGHHH!!! But you would have post a post up on craigslist if you really cared right? I know i know...i'm trying to rationalize my way into a scenario that fits my agenda...its tough though ya know?

Dog is an angel sent by the gods to keep you company and protect you in case of a bad future event imo

you will find no chip.

lol. I love how confident and assertive you sound in this post Egon. Gave me a rockhold for a sec. lmao.

i'm really with the "guaranteed outcome" on this

but maybe you could get the family's name from the chip then facebook them, lmao. check out their profiles you know? maybe can see what kind of people they are, maybe they'd have lots of pics of the dogs, or none (which might be telling). or statuses pertaining to the situation (saying they miss their dog/asking friends for help/etc).

If the dog is truly missed by the owner, you would see pictures posted at power poles and sign posts within a 3 mile radius and at the nearest dog park. Maybe someone will recognize it but to see if the dog is truly abused, I would see how he socializes with other dogs

I'd bet money that if he's that well trained, his injuries are simply from being a stray/fending for himself for a while, not from having shitty owners.

Get him to the vet bro.

Also, good on you for helping the poor guy out.

Shit man. You have to scan him but you can also argue the owners are abusive. I saw a guy cracked out on something dragging his Frenchie with two girls pulling on the leash trying to stop him. I ran over and said what's going on? and the girls said he kicked the dog square in the face in the dog park so I ran after him and took him down face first on the sidewalk, rolled him, got mount and rape chocked him as the girls took the dog away.

Someone else called the cops and we waited as he tried to take his dog back. I wouldn't let him. Cops showed but not before he took off without his dog. They said the dog would go to ASPCA for treatment but he would have the right to get her back but a judge could deem him unfit.

Who knows how long he's been on his own for. He may have ran away or been lost months ago. He could have had great owners, but had some brutal months on his own. Some people are incredibly cruel to stray dogs.

If you haven't already, I'd look into the aspect of someone who has lost him. Check social media sites (tons of pet finder groups) and maybe check with your local spca.

Also, if you're serious about keeping him and trying to skirt the microchip... I believe those things are somewhat dependent on area. I'm not 100% sure, but I think I recall reading something like if they're taken out of state (or province for me) they can't be traced. I remember thinking it kinda defeats the whole purpose if it's true.

I am. Have an appt @ 4. But this vet is someone I know who I guess isn't going to force the scan. Do we scan him? What do you think?

Nope. His previous owners obviously didn't take good enough care of him to keep him around or put out any fliers when he was lost. Keep him.

seems like the dog really took a liking to you and your other dog. Keep that mofo and spoil him (especially if you see no missing dog signs )

Tough spot for sure. For me, my dog is my life. If I lost her it would ruin me.

If your vet scans it, you may be able to gather more information on the potential owner and the circumstances around it. If you're cool with the vet, see if that's something he's willing to do for you. An off the books kind of thing.

Chances are, if someone abused the dog and abandoned it they're probably not going to want it back anyway... especially if vet bills are required.

what if it's an infection/wound he acquired after he got loose?

would have your friend look at him first to determine what may have caused it
if he feels it was caused from abuse or neglectful owners, fuck them
but if something that could have happened while out on their own, might be good to try and find the owner if you can

He's well socialized. I have a big GS and he was totally chill. Didn't bat an eye around him. They just enjoyed taking giant breathfulls of each others balls and ass for a good hour.

though i also always worry that the animal could have been dumped off somewhere
lived in the country and ppl always dumped off their animals, especially if they were pregnant or injured/sick and they didnt wanna deal with the bills
what if its owners are like that, then they pick him up again like oh thank u so much
then dump him off elsewhere >:/

w/e
i dont trust ppl and always think the worst lol

What's the likelihood of an owner mistreating a dog that he or she has chipped?

Possession being nine-tenths of the law, I say eat the dog.

I'm leaning towards this. I cringe at the thought of him going to a place where his life is going to suck balls. I think I'm gonna keep him. Thanks guys.

Youre allowing your mind to fill in a whole lot of blanks to suit your desires here.

About 2-3 months some woman my wife works with found 2 dogs wandering around near a gas station. She takes them home and then to the vet and one of them is chipped. Short story shorter, The dog belonged to a family that had lost the dog several months prior. She ends returning the dog to this shocked family with small kids....everyones crying and overjoyed as they had figured the dog was gone for good. Imagine how sweet that would be , as a dog owner I know you can. You've gotta at least make an effort , you'd sure as hell want someone to do the same for you.

lmao nice, giving that guy the beatdown

tho too bad he could still have that dog ):

EXACTLY. That's what i'm thinking. I feel bad fucking over another family...but I scowered Craigslist up and down and in my city everyone uses craigslist. With me he's going to live like a king. I walk my dog every day. Dog parks on weekends. Sleep inside. Spoiled as shit he will be fo' life. Tough situation!

I'm sure we'd be posting about it on local Facebook groups and stuff like that, so ya, if that type of thing is prevalent in your area, the fact that it's not there is a bit odd. Maybe if the vet is a bruh, get the scan, check the address that comes up and make a decision based on the location and maybe even a quick driveby...but ya...tough spot for sure.

omg poor thing with the eye. It was good that you took him in. Take him to the vet as soon as possible but I'm sure that what was done to his eye is by the previous owners.

it sucks losing pets
but honestly, if you can give him a good life, just keep him

also, chip or not, who the fuck wouldnt put up ads everywhere they could for information on their pet? like its the minimal thing you can do to help find them. if they arent doing that then i wonder just how much they could care :/

would keep dog, keep checking online for ads and look at fliers in local stores/malls on the billboard for a couple weeks. if nothing came up, hello new precious pup, welcome to the house lol

Yeah luckily one of the girls was a social worker and had ties to the homeless community and ASPCA and she was going to follow up on everything. Worst case scenario would be it was his mother's dog or someone else related that could be allowing the abuse but not actually doing it. Hopefully crackhead just went away.

I am. Have an appt @ 4. But this vet is someone I know who I guess isn't going to force the scan. Do we scan him? What do you think?

Tough call.

If you're cool with the vet, tell him your suspicion, and get his opinion.

I'd be leery about the owner who may or may not have abused him.

Good on you for taking him to the vet.

Youre allowing your mind to fill in a whole lot of blanks to suit your desires here.

ARGH!! You're right...K.. I think I'm going to get him scanned..then see if I can get the address...go scout the house out as another poster recommended...take pictures of teh house...then come back to you guys..post the pics if it's some ghetto looking puppy mill...and make a decision from there. Sound fair or na?

I'm torn as to what advice I should offer, on one hand, we can't just assume the dog has been abused by his previous owners, however, if he was and you return him, what safeguards are there against it happening again?

Honestly, I would opt for the "guaranteed outcome". If you have enough space in your heart and your home for him, then do it. The love of a dog is so simple and pure - why anyone would want to hurt one is beyond me.

Your a good man El Chapo.

How the fuck do you know that exactly? Anything could have happened, its not exactly hard for a dog to cover 10-15 miles and end up on the other side of town.

My neighbors were boarding their dog last year and the dipshits kid left a gate open, dog was wandering around in the country for 2 weeks before he wandered up to a house and someone called. You just don't know , but making shit uo to suit what you WANT to be the case isn't exactly honest.

I believe the scan only pulls the information of the dogs vet. Not the owners house. It would then be up to the vet to contact thE registered owner.

I'd say keep him, put up a couple of signs maybe but if he was looking jacked when you found him he's probably better of with you anyway, you're a good man for doing this
