Hey everyone so this is my first ever post, I've been a lurker for a couple months now lol but finally decided to make an account. I've tried to find the answer to this question but all I can find are the more BJJ/Judo type floors or post with the entire boxing ring DIYs (but not enough info on just the floor). So here it goes....

So as the title states I'm trying to figure out how to replicate a boxing ring's floor. I'm not interested in ropes, corner pads etc I just wanna get the floor right. Hopefully I'll be moving into a new house (fingers crossed) and really want to set up a home gym (you guessed it!!), with the entire floor just like a boxing ring, with heavy bag, DE bag, Speed bag, place to shadow box, jump rope, other general workout space, etc. I want the entire area, hopefully a 20'x20' set up with a boxing ring style floor, not to squishy and padded and not too much like a trampoline but with that just right firm springiness.

I just box so no throws, grappling etc so I don't think I need the "ultimate DIY judo floor" that I've seen around with the 4"x4" foam blocks separated under plywood with 1" foam on top covered in vinyl or whatever. But if that'll give me the results I want so be it. So anyone with experience using a DIY floor like that and a traditional boxing ring please let me know your opinions on how they compare.

Also this would be set up in the basement so I'd have at most 8ft of height if not less to work with so the thinner the boxing ring floor the better. I know someone will ask about why I even want it then if I'm worried about height and clearance and I should just keep the cement floor. Well because that

judo sub floors would be my recommendation. all you need are boards and foam and either a mat or carpet padding.

K4BOSH-have you used both? They compare relatively the same?

DizzyYeahYeah- I've youtube'd, sherdoged, googled the hell out of it and find either Judo/bjj floors specifics or a tutorial on how to make a complete boxing ring (of varying qualities, mostly pre-fabricated and retail rings just being put together) but again not enough specifics on the floor construction or on the description of the functionality of the floor (i.e. springiness).

Hence the question to everyone here to try and get some first hand experience

ive never tried them personally, but feom what ive heard from everyone that has them say thwyre great for falling, but if its just boxing then a regular puzzle mat or any type of non slippery flooring would just do fine. most boxing gyms dont use special floorings anyway, just cement.

id worry about finding a way to minimize the sounds the heavy bag system will make from the punches I throw.

I believe he wants to replicate the boxing ring flooring, not the boxing gym's flooring. I don't know myself. I know cheapshot was looking for a ring. If he found one, maybe he has a little insight on how it's made?

Edit: Here's some info on the foam from title's site.

TITLE Boxing Non-Competition Ring Padding

Yeah, we ended up building a ring from scratch. You can see some pics of the finished product on our facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sorabella-Training-Center/383513278382669?fref=photo&sk=photos_stream

20' square including the apron, about 18' square in the ropes. 1' raised off the floor, 3/4" ply on the box, EVA foam and compliant with USA Boxing competition specs. I'll see if I can find some pics of the build process so that people can get a better idea of how it came together.

For the OP, you may want to just buy EVA foam and use liquid nails to adhere it to the floor. Buy a large canvas and secure it over the top if you want it to feel like a true ring. Truth be told, I think it would be a hell of a lot easier (and way cheaper) to use some foam puzzle mats and call it a day.

Building on Cheap's post, here's some of the process in with our ring-building adventure.

First adhere EVA foam to the back of plywood:

Then create a grid-like base for the plywood to lay on:

Buy a cheap/used pro wrestling canvas to go on top of the foam:

Add some (optional) ropes, and you're rocking a full sized, USA boxing regulation ring:

I have dozens of pictures of the build process, but this should give you a pretty good idea of what we did. The grid-like base allows for some play, giving the ring just a bit of "spring." Not too firm, but faaaaar from bouncy.

Let me know if you have any specific questions, and I can walk you through it for certain.

Hope that helps!

Yeah, that's what I was looking for. We actually ended up foaming straight out from corner to corner all the way to the end of the apron. Love the result and I'm glad we built it from scratch to get exactly what we were looking for.
