Hey Guys,
I'm ready to put some mats down in my basement to get some extra BJJ practice in. Mostly drilling but maybe some light rolling too and a few takedowns. Nothing intense...yet. My basement is a concrete floor with some crappy tile over it. It's super hard. I've seen roll out, folding and puzzle mats from 1/4" to 2". How thick do I need the mat to be for my uses?

Also while I was doing a search on mats I saw the Gracie portable Grappling mats. Seemed nice and on par with pricing from other places. Anyone try them out and have any thought on them?

Thanks for the guidance.

With takedowns and a concrete floors you're probably going be more comfortable with the 2" mat

The 1 inch puzzle matts are very affordable, only thing is you might want to put a carpet between the cement and matts.

The 2 inch can be expensive and you might need to buy more than 1 to cover your space.

Careful with shipping, that's where you could get caught. I can get pretty good shipping prices

You can try to make your own. I haven't totaled the costs, but Rener has a video up on the mats they make and use.

Ok so I'm better off with the thicker mat. My Cousin and I will be splitting the expense. I want to keep it as inexpensive as I can. We'd be using them at both our houses. So We're either moving mats from one house to the other OR we make areas at each of our places that cost about $250 ish. The GreatMats ones looked really nice and 1 5/8". Price with Shipping made them more expensive than getting Dollamur or Zebra portable mats. GetRung seem to be well priced...especially with the 5% discount I found. Only 1" though. Saw some reviews of those mats not always fitting perfectly thereby leaving gaps. Terrified of breaking a toe as I haven't trained for 4 weeks now with an injured big toe! Ugh.

The portable mats I've seen are all about 1.25". I guess that isn't enough for my surface. It's looking like the Gracie 2" mat may be the way to go. at $500 for 100 sq ft....that hurt to just say it. Even more nervous since they are too new to find any reviews on them!

Thought of making my own as I watched the video Rener put up. No clue where to get the EVA foam though. Especially cheap enough to go that route instead of just the GetRung mats. Hmm. Decisions decisions.

Whats wrong with laying down old mattresses

That is the wrong kind of rolling...

you will be fine with 1-1/4 to 1-1/2" mats, that is what my gym has and they work perfect, I am 240lbs and I don't feel falls and what not.

See if you can find a high school or college getting rid of some old wrestling mats. You may have to trim it to fit, but it will be plenty thick for rolling and take downs.

Seems most people here have the roll out mats and not the folding ones. Besides portability, is there any reason for that? I like the folding mats since they velcro together. Seems like an extra cost and hassle to keep taping roll out mats together. Just wondering if there was some sort of real performance difference with rolling on each type? all that I've seen are the same Cross linked Polyethelene foam. Thanks for the input.

I love a good deal but if a school is ready to get rid of their gear, I wouldn't want to have anything to do with it.
