So I know 24 isn't bad, but how old is too old to really have a chance of having a career in kickboxing? I have some interest in making a trip to Thailand for a few months in order to try and get a start on a possible career, but that may take a year or so to get to... Any examples of good kickboxers that started a bit late but still did well? I've been doing mma training and what not for the last year or so and trained in striking before that. I know this is a fairly stupid thread, but oh well lol

I like the thread and have always wondered the same. I'm only 19 but have no background in any martial art, didnt even wrestle in high school.

Just give it a chance and never look back. Just know the training is going to be way more intense, even more so than what you built it up to be in your head. If your shins have never been through it before its going to hurt.

The normally like to kill the nerves in your shins so you don't feel anything when you kick. Best of luck and no regrets.

Yeah I prolly would have started training earlier, but I was in the Navy. I've recently lost my mom and grandpa so it just got me thinking about how short life is. My passion has always been martial arts so I'm just trying to get in a position where I can make an attempt at making it my career. Does anyone know and gyms where you can actually live and train in Thailand and if so what is the price range?

hmm, tough question
muay thai (my personal belief) isnt as complex as bjj or diverse as mma
a lot of muay thai comes down to heart but dont get me wrong
it will take years to learn the subtitles
sure there are plenty of tricky fighters but I think they developed that style after learning the basics.

so if you are an athletic person you could probably have a few good runs
before your body gives up, based on the fact muay thai is so brutal on the body
not sure what you are considering though
my first time in Thailand I was 22 I think, was in probably the best shape of my life
and was considered myself decent at muay thai (having put in 3-4 years in my own country) when I went over there it was shock how much better the average fighter/trainer was then me.

career as in what terms?
to become k1 champ, a thai champ ect...

i would assume 19 isn't bad at all as long as you start training soon. I would say BJJ would be the first step if you wanted to do mma.

I would like to do some Muay Thai and hopefully get into some k-1 type fights as well. I don't care if I can make it to champion status, as long as I could make a halfway decent living doing what I enjoy.

Your age exactly. 24 is the cutoff. Fact. No one who's ever started fighting past 23 has had any success. Ever. So give up now, quit, and go learn a trade like basket weaving or mopping.

lol ok ok I know it was a stupid question. I know a lot start training early in life so just wanted to get some opinions on starting at this age. Basket weaving does sound pretty tempting though...

Sorry for your loss! Don't approach martial arts as a career, instead think of it as a lifestyle because it will affect your life greatly, whether you become pro or not.

I don't want to dampen your curiosity and enthusiasm but 24 is probably too late to become a pro fighter. However, you can definitely prove that wrong if you work incredibly hard and are a natural athlete. Regardless, practicing martial arts seriously will improve your life both physically and mentally. Just find a good teacher at a good dojo.

not stupid at all bro. I am 28 and I have been working out for 4 years, in great shape, but doing jits for about 6 months. Blue belt. not looking to make a career out of it, but I can wreck some of the 2 year higher rank dudes, put your mind on your goal and get to work

Ron Lyle started boxing in his 20s and became an amateur at 28 and only had his first pro fight at 30 but it didn't prevented him of fighting great names like Ali or Foreman and fighting for the title. Don't forget that the only person that can stop you of realising your dream or goal is yourself and whenever youre in doubt think of Ron Lyle.

Just remember good ol' Randy. age 34 when he first competed in MMA.

I think you have a better chance in MMA than kickboxing TBH. But it really depends how fast you learn, are you above average compared to the other guys in the gym? I would work a job and try and get a couple pro fights before fully persuing it

It is never too late. If you have the skill, you will find some level of success, no matter what age you start (within reason).

I think the only time age would come into consideration is if you're trying to start at 45+.

Depends what your final goal is.

John Danaher started Jui Jitsu at 28 i think .

This might sound like a trite answer, but here goes...

The only chance you have of being truly successful at kickboxing or any martial art is if you LOVE it, are passionate about it, live, eat, and breathe it.

If you do LOVE it, then you shouldn't worry about what age you start, you should do it for the love.

If you're one of these people who thinks "I could be good at that, I bet I could make a career of that" chances are about 99% that you'll tire quickly of getting beat up in the gym when no one is watching. I learned that the hard way. I didn't "have it mentally" in the sense that I just didn't care enough about fighting to get my ass kicked several times a day, five days a week. This doesn't mean I'm weak, in fact I'm pretty tough, but to become successful in any combat sport you will catch a ton of ass-whoopings along the way. If you don't REALLY want it, a job at McDonalds will look like a great option. If you do REALLY want it, age is unimportant, just do it for the love and see what happens.

This is a great post. I am 36 and I am the strongest most fit then I have been in my life. I think about it all the time and the years just keep ticking away. You MUST TRY kid.

No limits man just get out there. 24...lmao you're still a young "adult" so you can take punishment. Giver!
