Hi there,
I'm tossing up the idea of picking up wrestling. But of course before I commit to it I want to give it a try first before investing a lot of money.

So how necessary is wrestling specific gear such as boots, headguards and singlet?

I don't think the club trains in singlets but they do train in boots. How long do you think I can get away with not wearing boots? And if I do look at buying boots, what should I look at? There seems to be a huge variation in price.

I have never wrestled but if it's like any other combat sport iv ever done then just turn up in a good pair of running trainers and some comfortable shorts ( probably best if they aren't tapout) and try it out. Once you have attended a few sessions you can start to decide if you like it or not then ask the coach about what you should buy, as he will know best.

I never bought anything until I got cauli ear, kneed square in the balls, and broke my toe. Now I have earguards, a cup, and boots.

Prevention is better than cure my friend.

And if you box,you can just wear wrestling boots instead of boxing footwear

Some wrestling boots are really sticky on mats I have found and can affect your pivoting and movement. Just my experience.

I'd get the headgear for sure, I mean I doubt a cup is even optional lol. I train BJJ and we just got a guy that started teaching an impromptu wrestling class during open mat. Long story short two years of BJJ has not taxed my ears as much as drilling double legs for the last month.
