i'm not looking for an answer like the more you train the better you'll get thats obvious but more in terms of how many times a week should you to train in order to see consistent improvement and be able to develop some competitive standup for amateur mma (considering i'm primarily a grappler)

so for example its considered 1x/week for bjj is just maintenance so you don't loose your existing skills, 2x/week is slow progress, 3x/week or more is rapid improvement but i would think bjj is much harder to pick up then boxing since there's just a lot more to learn and you have to have a training partner to drill stuff while you can do the punching bag/shadow boxing at home, etc

so any opinions...

depends on how bad you are mate, boxing isn't as easy as you think, alot of guys that i've gone over the basics with find it very unco at first like lifting back foot, steping forward with punches, whipping sholders with punches.
when i was boxing, i felt some radical improvements training 3 times a week, kickboxing i started feeling improvement traing close to 4-5 times a week, some mornings and nights... mainly because it was a big change in stance from boxing to muay thai, but i got good punches and i just had to work on kicking technique and knees and mixing up with punch combos. elbows are fun to but ammateur KB hhere no elbows or knees to head.

I agree. Boxing ain't easy at all. I thought I would breeze through the first few weeks of jump roping and learning one-twos and what not. One and a half hour of boxing training is as hard as three hours of judo. Cardio wise. I do it 4 times a week. I;ve been trying to go for 5, but i'm lazy.

ok lemme rephrase the question a bit ... how far will 2x/week of hard training combined with consistant bag work and shadow boxing at home get me (i picked up grappling pretty quick and i am in good shape, etc) but can't train striking more then a couple times a week i do want to start competing in amateur mma in about a year though (i feel my wrestling/bjj is good enough at this point but i want to get my standup to the point where i basically don't get koed before i get the takedown) ... i have no striking experience at this point besides some karate when i was a kid which i realized after my first boxing class was useless

well pick up the basics at training, train that on the bag, and use the days down the gym as spaaring, and learning. toughen you up a bit so you take a punch. i would recomend kickboxing or MT, so you can learn to take leg kicks better though, more for the conditioning, and be good with your hands.

you wanna learn something...do it like its your job. there's no time to fuck around. you wanna start fightin? before you start worrying about your standup skills, start worrying about your cardio. People show their true colors when theyre tired. The only thing you should worry about is pushing yourself beyond your limits everytime you train( to the point where you cant keep going, because most likely that is what will happen in a fight). Boxing is all about training yourself until you cant even hold your hands up in a guard....your shoulders and arms should be dead tired just trying to keep a guard.

my conditioning is fine i've wrestled all my life and been doing bjj for nearly 3 years and have done mma training ... i'm just asking about the standup because i only have a couple days a week where i can train it so i wanted to know if thats enough to really pick up a new martial art as i know in bjj it would not be

You can defintely learn with 2 quality sessions a week. Hopefully each session is giving you an hour or more of skill work in addition to any conditioning.

Once a week is not going to get you very far by itself. If you have very limited time or money, try switching enmpahsis for a while to boxing (2-3x/week). After getting the basics down, you could drop to 1x/week but work at home for 2 bag sessions. Basically practicing what you learned at class that week.

2x a week should be fine for amateur, as long as you're doing bagwork at home on the other days
