How many GIs did you have when you've started?

I only have 1 gi, training over under a year twice or thrice a week. I can buy another one, but seeing that I'm just a lowly WB, I supposed it's expected that as a beginner you're not supposed to brandish a new pair til you get your skills at par, or reach blue.

Is this how most higher ranking views it?

What do you think, guys?

i dont like doing laundry every time i train. i had one gi for about 4 months before i bought a second one. just picked up my third this week.

2 gis are enough for every belt, training everyday

Get another gi dammit! It's worse if your a white belt with a stinky gi. If you have another you can alternate allowing one to be washed and dried between classes. Stick with white or blue. I would recommend a Fuji. The quality surpasses the more expensive ones and the price is unbeatable.

Hobbyists, regardless of belt level, should have 2-3 gis to rotate/clean/in case one rips. More serious gym rats or competitors probably about 4-5 (more if you don't have access to washer/dryer). More than that is just excessive and unnecessary. I had 12 at one point and realized how stupid it was, donated/gave away half of them and I never have gi shortage.

As far as colors go, most BJJ practitioners will look at a white belt funny if he's wearing any color but white or royal blue. Black and navy blue are legal but it's best to wait (and check academy rules) before delving into these. Red, green, camo, etc. are just for the eccentric high ranks. White/blue are safe colors, you know they'll be accepted in even the most traditional of BJJ gyms, and it's just good basic Jiu Jitsu.

I currently have 3 useable. White Koral MKM, Blue Koral MKM, White Gameness

I started with 1, then got a 2nd when the first one seemed like it might rip soon so I wouldn't wouldn't have to wait for a replacement. I still only have 2 gis, and a couple of mismatched top and pants.

my wife and i both train 4-5 days a week, i sometimes train twice a day, so we tend to have a lot of gis:

2x White Mendes Bros (our club's competition gi)
White redstar original
White redstar stamp
White redstar clean
White KF single
White Veni Vidi Vici
Blue Koral MKM
Blue Fightplanet
Blue toraki
Navy scramble ichiban
Black redstar stamp
Black redstar original
Black #ONE Kimonos
Black tatami estilo
Black Fuji all-around

I've also ordered the custom Killer Bee gi, and my wife recently won a Kingz kimono.

What I'm getting at is you should always have a clean gi, and the more you train, the more you'll probably need in case one gets ripped or whatever. The last thing you want is to be the smelly guy.

(I've been training bjj 2 years, my wife 4)

When I started Judo, they ordered a gi for me before we had met in person.

It was an HSU A5 and it was way too big for when I started, and it got worse after I started losing weight. My buddy had a Mizuno EuroComp, and I liked it so I ordered one of those after 3-4 months.

I currently have 5 now: 2 Isami sanchikos, 2 Mizuno Eurocomps, 1 Mizuno Sempai, and 1 Fushida Icon.

baller alert

I have two that I wear all the time, and when one wears out I get another. I have a backup super thick Judo gi that I hate to wear to train but will in a pinch, and occasionally for comps (since it's hard to grip). I've mostly had Atamas, but I recently got a Padilla & Sons and am happy with it so far. The pants are especially comfortable. I'm thinking about getting an Inverted Gear for my next one, the reviews are good and I can't lie the panda is really cool, especially since I don't really dig the 'I'm a badass pitbull' attitude in BJJ (which thankfully seems to be fading a bit as the sport gets bigger). I'm much more panda than pitbull (though pandas are about the laziest and most anti-social animals around, of which I hope I'm neither). I'm more orangutan than either, actually, but I don't know of any orangutan gis. If they existed, I'd get one.

I currently only have two Fuji tops (one is ripped), one pair of Fuji pants, one pair of some horribly old shoyoroll pants that have been ripped and re-sewn and a Koral top. I'm waiting for my friends to get their A0s in at their gi company for me, their gis are sick. I can say for sure that having only really two gis sucks bad right now for training 6+ times a week.

I have two, a black one I got when I first started and a white Moya Brand one.

get as many gis as you need to train as often as you want with a clean set of clothes.

On the same page as you bro! :)

okay, cheers guys, so the concensus here is to get another GI regardless of skill level. I thought for a moment that I should let my colored GI rip or improve my skill set (which ever comes first) to buy a new one. Thanks Hillary for poiriting out what color is preferred for WB.

so I might go for a cheap white Fuji or Tatami later this week.

Yeah man, definitely get another one. I own 3 right now just to keep a rotation going. makes it less urgent to do laundry the moment i get home at 9:30 at night.
