Smoker? Is that the correct terminology?

Ill answer since Im bored.

Some people as little as three months. Probably some people years, never. It depends on your fitness level, your innate ability, quality of training, commitment etc. Also access to and quality of sparring partners, level of ability of potential opponents.

The point is that cant be answered by anonymous people on teh interwebz.

or you could fly to thailand, get four weeks training and get into a full muay thai rules fight with a local fighter like I did.... :icon_chee:icon_twis

it all depends on you, if you feel your ready.... then grab your balls and step into the ring. I promise you, you'll learn more in one round in your first fight, than you did in all your training before that...

and its a great experience I think everyone should go through at least one time in their lives... to see what its like to step into a ring and fight.... nothing makes you feel more alive...even if you lose

edit- its also a good idea to see what your trainer has to say as well.. training for a fight is a little different than just everyday normal training so ask his opinion and go from there.

Talk about in at the deep end.

How much MT experience did you have before going to thailand, and how many fights did the local fighter have ?

after 3 or 4 months of training you should have the basic technique down, for most people anyway. from there its just when you are mentaly ready.

I had some golden glove boxing training for 6 months 2-3 years before so I could box a little but I mostly started brand new,... never did any specific muay thai before going there...

trained for 4 weeks... set up a fight with a local from another gym... I'd say he had between 5-10 fights before me...

oh... if you do go to thailand to train... they ask you right away if you want a fight while your there and its totaly up to you if you want one but make sure you are mentaly ready.... every time a promoter rolls into camp, all the trainers ask everyone there if they want to fight..lol.. its pretty funny actually... I think they get a kick-back from every fighter they set up....

very nice. huge props dude.

I started MT just for fitness, and didn't move up to contact classes until I'd been doing pad and bag work for about 10 mos. I had my first smoker about 6 mos. after that.

I could moved on a more aggressive schedule, but I'm glad I didn't. Having the extra time in before getting thrown into the pressure of a fight helped me to have much better habits in place than many of the guys that rushed into their smokers after just a few months. You can watch a lot the three-month-first-smoker fighters' lips turning blue because they're forgeting to breathe, or the footwork just goes completely out the window.

So no need to rush.

When you're ready, your Kru will tell you.
