How does Dana White get away with being so unprofessional sometimes?

Because it's a new sport with quite a few fans who thinks of themselves as following something a little more hardcore and unconventional than most other sports. Him acting like he does grants him a feeling of authenticity to many, and that can trump professionalism, especially with younger audiences. Same with Rogan contra other sports commentators.
 
Because people overreact about most things he say.
 
Because he's successful and doesnt answer to anyone, its pretty evident the Fertitta's dont care what he does.

Because the UFC has always relied on that grimey, shady edge to their operations to help sell the product. Dana sells that further with his personality.

In many areas that is also a thin line between "unprofessional" and "masculine". If Dana White responds to criticism by telling a reporter to get fucked to their face, it's because he thinks that what a man would do, not what an empty suit would do.

MMA as a sport is defined by the ability of one individual to not have to listen to shit from anyone besides those other fighters he allows into his camp. It's not about being professional. It's about being as brutal as can be with as few rules as you can get away with. Dana's personality reflects that and the fans who love the sport for what it is love him for that.

I hope the UFC never loses that grimey side. The deeper the Fertitta's mob ties go, the better for the sport IMO.
 
The UFC and MMA generally isnt really covered much by the mainstream media, promotion is mostly either in house or from specialist net sources who arent as critical.

The media calls him out when he is out of line like with the homophobia stuff, the Loretta Hunt thing and the UFC 151 thing, but 90% of the complaints around here are just crying and whining about the smallest thing that only super sensitive internet posters care about.
