Up until 2017 I had always stayed in a shared setup, mostly college students, some families, one absolute horrible creep who was a degenerate gambler.

Half way through 2017 I was forced to get a place of my own, sharing with others was just no longer feasible, too much BS, and I got this insanely cool apartment.

After one year I had to leave (owner was selling) and with incredible luck upgraded to an even better apartment.

Then after 4 years there I had to leave (owner had to sell) and have been in a really sweet place since.

Now I have to move again (owner is selling), and the place I'm going is good, but a downgrade on where I'm at, everything is old, but the property owner has said he'll fund upgrades.

But it's smaller.

So I have to improvise with things like storage, appliances, being more careful with noise cause sound proofing between apartments isn't great.

How have your living arrangements been historically, best to worst, how are you setup now?

And what improvisations have you made that really improved your setup?

Storage racks, fold out beds, changing the windows perhaps for acoustic proofing if it's noisy outside?
Dehumidifiers are a game changer for preventing mould and actually making the place warner, cause air moisture really gives a place that chill factor.

im very happy with where im at now. i live between two schools, so every morning at 9am i hear "oh canada" and the morning announcements, and at recess i can hear the kids playing and thats a nostalgic sound. i live on my own with two free roam bunnies and a cat, theres nobody to disrupt my peace or make any messes. ive filled my place up with retro junk and art, my friend stayed the night and said it was like staying at a retreat it was so peaceful and different. lots of space, two bedrooms, sizable laundry room, a storage room the size of a bedroom, my patio too for the bunnies to hang out on.

the only downside is that my family knows where i live, and the local unmedicated violent schizophrenic stalker who was just at my door last week. he was escorted away by police and luckily has had his guns taken away from him. lmao.

I live in a nice area of Zurich which is great. My apartment is very spacious if not a little expensive.. I could use some nice pictures with which to decorate some of my walls. Not really sure where to start, though. I am happy with everything, though. I don't live far from work thanks to the U-bahn and my working hours could be a lot worse. Unless you go to clubs, it does get a bit boring past 9pm as every shop and store is basically shut.

More like the housing situation in West Europe is a mess.

It's not called an "crises" for nothing.

Imagine for a moment, if you will, if there were not millions and millions of "extra" people living there how the housing supply might look.

Regardless, multiple evictions does speak to personal problems beyond the normal.

An "eviction" happens when the property owner decides to sell.

You have to leave.

You work at a sandwich shop?

After uni I lived in a shared house with three buddies and we played a lot of Xbox and did a lor of partying.

Then I moved into a two bed city centre apartment with another friend, it was literally a two minute walk to my office, had some good times there.

Eventually I decided I wanted to buy a place so at 25 I moved back to my parents for 18 months and hardcore saved and worked tons of overtime and bought a new build two bed city centre flat overlooking the river and had a few fun batchelor years.

Next I met my now wife, after a few years we sold the flat and bought a detached house in a nice suburb.

Been here five years now, replaced the windows, new flooring, decorated every room, put a pond in the garden, new kitchen, new bathroom, got an office pod in the garden and now we're just about to convert the loft into more living space.

Assuming you're based in the US?

First two things are exactly what I need to do, new windows (sound proofing with acoustic triple glaze) and new flooring. Some mods in the kitchen, ceiling insulation etc.

A new bathroom setup would be good, but first I have to get totally moved in and then figure out what to do in order of urgency.

I lived with my parent until I was 24.
(except for a 9 month period at 18 where I moving in with my 27 yrs old GF at the time)

My parent have a three storey townhouse,
I had the last floor by myself (bedroom, living room)
Was using a small fire exit emergency door as my personal entrance.
Would still be living there if I had my own bathroom tbh.

Moved out of my parent with my best friend to a nice apartment on a party street of Quebec City
(Cartier Street)

Only stayed there a couples of year because the rent there was high even back then.

Lived on a small 1 bedroom apartment alone for a another couples of years before buying a condo downtown Quebec City.
was lucky to buy it 10 years ago because property price have skyrocketed.

Been wanting buy something bigger when Covid started.
But it's more an more unlikely,
at least until I really need something bigger or get tired of the city.

Recently moved into a 2/1 with tiny storage from a 3/2 with a garage and it’s crowded as hell. Too cluttered so need to sell off some stuff. Crazy how fast it all accumulates when you have ample storage. The second I didn’t and I see all the useless crap I own.

Living room isn’t big enough for some of the furniture so it looks weird now. Need smaller furniture to make it look nice, so for now, I’m sad with the shape of the living spaces in my place. Looks very divorced 40-something here, which is on the money, but sad as hell too. The 3/2 I came from didn’t look depressing like this place lol

I need sturdy preferably aluminum non-rusting shelves for all the walls.

I bought my first home in 2017, which is still my primary residence. It is a 2,000 sqft with 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths.

Its value has gone up from 225k to 350k.

I own the second lot next to the house with a 20' x 100' driveway. So I can park trailers, boats, extra vehicles, etc.

I have wanted to build another garage for a while, as my attached garage is too small for my hobbies. My work is VERY VERY volatile right now, so I will definitely not be building the new garage any time soon.

No. Your life sounds horrible, having to move all the time against your will.

That's one of the good things about owning your home.

I'd hate to be somewhere that I love and be forced out because the owner is selling.
You're right.

FML!

lol, it's not that bad. I moved into my own place for the first time at 31. Before that it was always sharing with someone. In college with your buds, that's fine, up until you need to study or sleep and they're partying or being noisy.

Random people, sucks!

The rest is mixed.

But I've stayed in luxury penthouse suites for years, other luxury spots, it was pretty good.

Just now I've moved into what may be a long term place, and it's okay, but I can hear these fuckers stomping about in the apartment above mine. That's my only issue so far.

I'm still in my 30's, maybe this will be my long term place now.
