What punch on average generally generates more power? A hook or a straight?

A hook because of the way you torque your hips and put your body into the punch. But a straight can be just as deadly. Overall the hook will generate more power (when thrown correctly)

yeah this would be my answer too assuming the boxer throws both punches correctly. but it wouldn't surprise me if there was someone out there who could throw a cross harder than a hook.

well it depends on the person's core and overall muscle size. A heavyweight can throw a cross harder then a lightweight can throw a hook.

But assuming both are the same size a cross won't generate as much force because you aren't putting as much torque behind it with your hips and it is extending away from the body while a proper hook should be kept nice and tight so you have more of your core behind it and the torque of your hips turning.

A hook but generally you throw the hook with your lead hand so depending on the person THAT particular punch (the lead hook) may not be harder than their cross. However the lead hook is much harder to see coming and that has more to do with knockouts than sheer force.

This is an unanswerable question due to the fact that people aren't robots designed to move the same ways, with the same amounts of force or speed.

Tommy Hearns' right hand was a crippling straight punch.

Joe Frazier's hook was a crippling circular punch.

Each is a demonstration of the superiority of the other.

it totally depends on the fighter and situaiton.

A precise straight punch is hard to come by in MMA these days, but theyre pretty devastating.

I'm surprised about all the debate...

A straight should be more powerful if the mechanics are good.

A hook is often more likely to cause a knockout because it's more likely to cause rotation on impact.

But if you're talking pure force, I'd be very surprised if there are more than a couple outliers who can generate more raw force with a hook than a straight.

It just depends on how they're built. Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya, as well as Miguel Cotto, all hook-throwers. The way they stand, the way they turn their bodies, they get good torque. But each of them don't have that notable of right hands by-comparison. Their bodies just don't generate the same force for that punch.

What's actually very rare, is getting guys who can hit equally hard with either style of punch, or either hand.

With sound technique,The straight shot is faster but not more powerful, the strike thats delivered on more of a curve will have more power,
you can also put a slight curve on a straight shot which will give it more power.

it all depends how well you transfer your weight. say for example, I can transfer my weight better from left to right(left hook) better then I can from back to front (straight right).

and it will be different for the next person. so no punch is better then the other. question might be is, what is your signature punch.

my 2cents

This. Also, I would assume that Hook's hit 'harder' since they hit the chin from the side, rather than from the front with a cross. Though if you were to hit someone on the side of the chin with a cross the results would be good. Andre Berto comes to mind here.

It also depends on distance as well.

At short range, a hook generates more power than a straight, whereas at mid/long range, a straight would result in more power.

Different for every fight. As someone else already stated, each fighter has their strength. Gatti had a good hook while Lennox Lewis was more of a straight right kind of guy. Depends on the disposition and physical capabilities of each fighter.
