The whole recent news with Diego made me think about how he got to this point and I remember how Diego was the IT guy who put Greg Jackson on the map. He was what Frank Shamrock was to American kickboxing academy which is the first disciple of a gym that made the gym relevant. So from what I understand is, GSP wanted to train with Jackson, with that in mind, Greg kicked Diego out. What I don't understand is, GSP was and is the first fighter to put Firas on the map. He already had a head trainer and so why did he even want to train with Greg Jackson?

Its a shame, Diego put Jackson on the map, Rashad came and then he had to leave due to Jon Jones and Donald Cerrone had to leave due to Mike Perry. ( which did not last long)

People forget that a young Diego was an ANIMAL! He was kicking ass, training with ODH and was appearing in all media. Granted he was a bit odd back then but he was charismatic, decent looking, dating Ali Sonoma and an exceptionally amazing grappler with decent punching power and solid chin.

Its too bad that his mentor turned out to be Judas Jackson. Greg really had no problem fucking over his original fighters who put him on the map. Even in the MMA series Kingdom, he played himself and on the show, he had a reputation of using fighters and then kicking them out when they started losing.

You mean when he was training with Saulo Ribeiro? Did he get kicked out or leave of his own volition then?

Definitely one of the greatest fights.

I'm sure Diego is insanely hard to work with

Also find me a gym where they don't prioritize the best guys, you expect Greg Jackson to ignore Jon Jones and spend all of his time working with Diego Sanchez 5 years out of his prime?

I always though GSP, Rashad, the bald guy with a pinch and Marquart were the original 4 at Jackson. Was Diego there before them?

Amen to that!

This was the fight that made me follow MMA deeply. Before I watched Ken and Tito as well as TUF but never really followed the sport one bit. When this fight went down, I knew I had to know who these guys are and get to know the culture of MMA better.

Through Karo, I got to know Gokor and Gene Lebell as well as so many other interesting things when it came to MMA.

It's who he was training with during his LW title challenge run when he wasn't at Jacksons for a while.

I did not know that, not sure what the story is but him getting kicked out of Jackson because GSP wanted to train was very sad. I mean I dont blame GSP but Greg should have been more considerate and loyal to his fighters. If there was no Diego Sanchez, nobody would give a shit about his gym since its in middle. Diego winning TUF 1 inspired Rashad evans and both got shafted in favor of GSP and Jon Jones.

In the beginning, Diego was easy to work with because he was young and not jaded by backstabbers. His style was simple which was pressure fighting which revolved around brawling and grappling. It was not a complicated style to train.

Also when he was kicked out, he was still in his prime, he had two decision loss to Fitch and Koscheck but was still kicking ass.

If Greg Judas Jackson wants to how amazing of a coach is, he should figure a way to improve his guys weakness and not just pick and choose fighters that are mainly talented. He is a shit trainer who got lucky by the early guys success + good at bullshitting people with false promise of victory.

Keith Jardine is the guy you are thinking. GSP was with Firas originally, you are right about Nate Marquart but it was Diego who put Jackson on the map and yes he was before them.

You must hate every trainer in MMA lol, every single sport prioritizes the best guys

Henry Cejudo was given special treatment his entire life in wrestling rooms because he was insanely talented

Diego Sanchez is off the deep end now, but has always been mentally ill on some level, it's easy to criticize on the outside, but dealing with that dude in real life is probably impossible

Diego left, wasn't kicked out. No loss for Jackson's as once the level of defensive grappling got a lot better in MMA Diego turned into a very mediocre fighter. Diego has also evolved a shockingly small amount considering how long he's been training and competing in MMA.

He didn’t get kicked out he left, it was his choice.

I like Javier Mendez because he has class and ethics. If you are failing or not doing well, he sits down with you and lets you know the situation. He also offers teaching position at his school for former fighters and does his best to take care of his former fighters.

The difference is, Greg kicks you out without any notice or hesitation. He has a history of this with Rashad and Donald. In real life, you give people two weeks notice. Greg kicks you without any warning or without anyone expecting it. That is messed up and is unethical.

I can see Diego Sanchez fighting Oscar de la Hoya or Jake Paul in boxing next. Or maybe joining a bare knuckle league.
