I have been looking through a lot of head gear reviews and nobody ever seems to mention anything about the ear protection on them. Last night at class I caught a left hook like I never have before and my ear started ringing. When the ringing cleared up I was almost deaf in my right ear. Went to the doctor to get it checked out and as I expected I ruptured my ear drum. I'm now sidelined for at least a couple weeks until it is healed. I was wearing my Everlast headgear, but have after that incident I'm going to have to say the protection on it is insufficient. Does anybody know of any headgear that has particularly good ear protection on it?

What everlast headgear were you using?

Everlast Dura Hide Headgear, Adult One Size

That's the headgear I have. I know its cheap and it has little to no protection. I just want to make sure my ass is covered next time so this doesn't happen again and I'm unable to spar for a couple weeks at least. I'm not even sure if the way headgear is designed if it can prevent a ruptured eardrum or if it's more for protecting cauliflower ear. I was hoping someone with some knowledge could chime in about that.

I use fight gear competition head gear and I always liked it.

When it comes to protective gear, especially for the head, I don't mind paying a premium.

For ear protection I'm not sure, I prefer protection that covers the ears as some head gear leaves a gaping hole for your ear to get smashed. your head gear seems to cover the ear but I think the issue is more that the padding on your headgear is insufficient.

This site has the competition headgear w/ cheeks for all colors but is expensive; Headgear

with some searching you can probably find a color you like for a lot cheaper.

This is one of the things I looked into when I was shopping for headgear.

The way it works is that if you can make a pretty good seal by pressing a glove against the ear area of your headguear, that can be dangerous. If someone punches you with a glove against your ear, and it creates a seal, all the force of the blow will go to compressing the air trapped between your head, the headgear and the glove, and ramming it into your ear.

The trick is to look for headgear designed so that there's always a channel for the air to escape.

I settled on a Winning headgear - Winning Products

Look at the way it's designed, you can't create a seal with a glove, so if someone punches you over the ear, there's always somewhere for the air to escape so you don't burst an eardrum.

It's pricy though. But hey, I still need my brain.

That gorilla headgear is exactly what I'm looking for!!!! Thanks. I like the winning a lot too, but it seems overpriced. Appreciate the help. I'm going to order some of that gorilla full face.

Yeah the silverback gorilla headgear should be pretty good. alot of people reccomend cutting out the top, and having a lace track sewn in instead. But who knows. The nose protection isnt the best, but the cheeks, forehead, rear, and sides/ears should be really protective.

On a sidenote, the winning fg2900 deffinitly isnt overpriced. I feel you get what you pay for. however, the price just went up alot, so maybe not so much anymore lol. any of the others listed should be more then enough

-kyle, can you post some pictures or a review when you get it in? I dont have much personal experience with that headgear, but i hear alot of good things!

I had the Fightgear Master's Competition Headgear. It absorbs a good amount of punishment. The nose protection was excellent, took an elbow to the face, no problem.
Two issues I had with it:
-Vision wasn't all that great, I kept on getting hit with hooks cuz I couldn't see them coming.
-The dye started to fade off on the inside after just a few session. Thought I had acid sweat, but it turned out other Master's had the same issue.
Ringside gave me a full refund. Hope the one you ordered works out better for you.
