i need headgear that protects the nose bu the winning fg 5000 is out of my budget.. whats most comparable to it? im thinking about the everlast safemax protector but im not sure..

anyone know?

The Safemax is pretty good, good vision and ventilation.

The Ring To Cage clone looks decent as well, they make pretty good products and it's unashamedly modeled off of the FG-5000.

Full Face Sparring Headgear

Truth is though, anyone can make a product that "looks" like another product, but as they say "the proof of the pudding is in the eating".

There isn't a headgear on earth with the same quality of padding as the Winning FG-5000 or FG-2900. It's the quality of padding that makes the difference.

Have you thought about the Cleto Reyes nylon facebar headgear? It's quite good as well. A bit pricey though at $130 (but that's nothing compared to $370 for the FG-5000).

Just my .02

This is the closest thing to FG-5000 for the following reasons:

1. Made in Japan
2. It's covered in Sofrina synthetic leather(same material used on FG-5000).
3. Their website says it uses a special padding material developed by NASA.
4. In addition to the face bar you also get chin protection.
5. Retails at 36800 Yen...

Oh wow, and this one has chin protection. Looks pretty sweet.

I got caught with a hook at the bottom of my jaw while wearing my FG-5000, it wasn't pleasant.

which do you think is better the everlast safemax headgear or the ringtocage full face headgear?

I'm not a big believer in "one size fits most" headgear. Heads come in different sizes, having a good fit is important.

The Everlast Safemax sucks, it feels like a brick. Totally uncomfortable.

I have the cleto reyes full face bar head gear ... let me know if you want me to post pics of anything you want to see.

I enjoy using it but it does make me a bit claustrophobic and I do tend to get tired easier using it. It also makes it harder to slip punches. Overall though it does a great job of protecting the nose. I'd recommend it.

A friend at my gym uses the old Title fully face head gear also. It is bulkier but gives good protection also. I got my Cleto Reyes headgear off of Craigslist for a good price. If cost is an issue and your doing this as a hobby I'd go with the Title headgear (only $50) as opposed to the Cleto Reyes ($150).

All the best,
Gambit

someone told me the bar on the headgears end up hurting your nose more than protecting it.. is this true?

does the cleto reyes one do this?

A concern of mine has been if someone throws a really good uppercut and hits the bar it could ride up on my nose and hurt me ... hasn't happened yet

In practice it has done a great job of protecting my nose and face. I get fatigued alot easier when I am wearing it and slipping punches is harder but apart from that, it is great.

Saved my face lots of times.

It depends on the headgear. So far, zero bloody noses with my Winning FG-5000. I've seen guys still get bloody noses with Fighting Sports headgear.
