sorry for putting this in the grappling thread, it didnt really fit anywhere and i have had good answers before from this board

i am training someone for his first amateur MMA fight and i think they are using headgear as a protective measure. is this common with amateur fights? i might be able to get it changed. how will this affect grappling? i imagine slipping out of a guillotine will be much harder...

ive never seen headgear but ive seen padded mma gloves and shinpads in some of the amateurs

In a lot of states where there isn't ametuer mma, you have to decide between head gear and allowing head shots or no head gear and not allowing head shots. I guess if you are going to decide on the rules, decide what you guys want to work on more, stand up striking or ground game.

depends on the regulations in the state, if none are put in place by the state, then it's up to the promoter/event sanctioning body.

headgear will F up groundfighting, will get spun, affecting breathing, seeing and escape/defending chokes will be more difficult also.

In MA, amateurs wear thicker gloves (6oz vs 4oz IIRC) and shin pads (I call them "boots"). Also, knees to the head from anywhere are prohibited.

Has anyone ever tried footlocking someone with the boots on? Does it make things considerably harder/easier?

Check out the old Pancrass fights with Sak, Bas, Ken, Frank, Funaki and Suzuki.

Also depends what kind of headgear you wear. Tae Kwon do headgear, or some kinds of boxing headgear will really, really hinder the ground game, because they either obstruct breathing and will easily displace in the wrong direction even blocking visibility or allowing for injuries (fingers stuck in the headgear's ventilation holes, protective bar, etc)
Some headgear that resembles the one used in Combat Sambo should work just fine, and it's not that big of a deal once you get used to it. The minor differences i notice is that it makes it harder to escape headlocks (and sometimes you get your head out but the helmet stays), and it's harder to finish arm/leg triangle chokes because if he bends the head a little, the helmet gives some space for blood to flow.

Just make sure your fighter understands that the headgear HELPS to avoid cuts, bruises and concussions to a minor extent, but you can still very well get KTFO.

This is like the guy asking about wearing wrestling shoes in a gi haha.

Discooo is that yoouu?? I can't see ya boy.

And above all. How are you training someone for a fight when you don't know the common protocols and if it's weird to wear head gear or not? Let alone be unsure if head gear will make it harder to get out of a guillotine. YES IT WILL BE HARDER.

Tell your friend to get a new coach if he wants to win.

Would be a first for me, I've seen shin guards and like 7oz mma gloves used but never headgear.
