Speculation was growing last night that American mercenaries had been deployed to Donetsk after videos emerged of unidentified armed men in the streets of the eastern Ukrainian city.

At least two videos published on YouTube earlier this week show burly, heavily armed soldiers with no insignia in the city, which has been gripped by pro-Moscow protests.

In one of the videos onlookers can be heard shouting 'Blackwater! Blackwater!' as the armed men, who wear no insignia, jog through the streets.

Media still used the name "Blackwater" because it is far more recognizable than Xe or Academi. The whole reason for the name change was a PR stunt by Erik Prince due to the negative publicity from Blackwater ops. in Iraq.

Now regarding the OP; can't tell one way or the other if they are
Blackwater/XE/Academi. They could be anyone.

Didn't I read somewhere a week or so ago that some of the Russian soldiers were going without insignia or markings? I could be wrong but I thought I heard that somewhere.

i was watching c4 news here last week and they were interviewing a Russian minister (Sergei someone) during the interview he mentions there 'are 100s of american private company blackwater in Ukraine and they are worried they will attack civilians' oddly the satelite signal suddenly got very bad and they cut him off....

Do you not think it's extremely odd that supposedly normal protesters started chanting the name of a specific American security company?

Are we supposed to believe that your average pro-Russian Ukrainian is going to immediately start chanting 'Blackwater' at foreign troops? Would 'American' not be the first thought? Why 'Blackwater' specifically? It's beyond strange.

Yes. I've been saying they could be mercs for ages now. Ukraine right now is the perfect place for mercenaries. If this continues it can become a new hot spot for them.

80-90% of ordinary Ukrainians can't speak English and assume that anyone speaking English is American.

So they can't tell a Brit and an American apart but they can tell the difference between an American solider and an American mercenary. Further, they know the specific name of the mercenary's company in a language they most likely don't speak. Right.
