I dont hear to many people talk about, infact I have never heard savate being mentioned too often.

Curios to know how the mechanics and stance are different then other striking arts for anyone who trained in it?

Here is a video of basic savate:

Always fancied trying it, a style developed for shoes and use on ships or in bars while drunk? I'm a fan. I'd like the early style with headbuts and eye gouges tho.

I took some Savate when I lived in France a few years ago. It was a fine sport, but not that different from normal kickboxing tbh. As far as I recall, they do have a few sneaky kicks towards the knee area that might be worth drilling though.

I typically relied on fast punches in Savate sparring because I had some boxing since before, and learning enough to evade kicks served me pretty well. Just as an example, it seems the long uppercut to the body just wasn't drilled in Savate class, so I would catch people with that every time.

For a more qualified answer, you'd need people who have trained for at least a few years though, plus competed some and maybe even cross trained in other styles.

no idea but maybe has something to do with the fact that its meant to be done with shoes on? not really conducive to most ring sport rulesets because of that but i could be wrong.

Hello !

I have trained for years in Savate. Sozuke Aiden s video show "Savate Defense" which is a self-defense version of this sport ( which is, in my opinion, 99% the same thing than Krav-Maga) .
That s kickboxing with shoes. The rules obliges you to kick like " mawashis". Chopping kicks ( which are more powerful ) like in Muay Thai are theorically forbiden. Ultimate savate weapon is " la pointe " : you kick with the tip of your shoe : howfully painfull ... Tip in the Liver = TKO :)

Good info. Thanks!

Are the shoes like, padded sneakers or are we taking steel tipped boots here? How much do I want to stay away from this sport is what I am asking.

I screwed around with it for about a month with a buddy in town that was very good. There's a nifty balance to it, and an unexpected power that comes with those pointed kicks. Was told to basically pretend I had a razor blade at the point of my foot

Dude's toes were fucking gnarly too, like they had been smashed down into little blocks. Makes sense I guess

Really cool stuff

All the savate I have seen with boots looked like big heavy hiking boots. If I recall, the style utilized kicking as it developed from sailors who would have to defend themselves as their boat was tossed and turned and splashed with waves when being boarded by an attacking boat. You would grab on to the closest thing that was nailed down and start kicking the shit out of people. Thus, the boots and chambered kicking style.

I've trained with this guy. Good instructor, very knowledgeable and fought some Savate fights years ago in France. Also a BJJ Blackbelt under Royler/David Adiv.

Also, Kicking with the shin is forbiden. I'm surprised by these 2 videos posted by phoenix 5: Savate is designated to fight wearing shoes ... i don't think that s a good school for MMA, but more for self defense.
In France, there are no Professionnal League in Savate, that s why very good savaters who wants to earn money often goes to Kickboxing or Muay-Thai.
Nowadays, youth is really more attracted by MT and MMA, Savate is considered as an "old fashioned" style even in France.

I did a little bit of it when I was in France.

They block low kicks with stop kicks sometimes.

Cool style.

There was an episode on Fight Quest for Savate

Nasty liver kick at 24:35

mmm not very nice from the coach in Fight Quest ...

You can also watch the Human Weapon episode on Savate on youtube if it doesn't rustle your jimmies.

I trained a JKD style which incorporated some Savate.

I remember a few years later I'd moved cities and went to a new kickboxing school. I was sparring with a guy a little better than me and I did a quick ball-of-the-foot roundhouse to the nerve cluster on his inner thigh, above his knee. He stopped moving, looked at me in astonishment and said, "... that really hurt."

We trained that kick, a ball-of-the-foot-kick roundhouse to the sternum and the downard strikes to the knee that John Jones does. We also did a few oblique kicks to the shins, but I think those were from Wing Chun.

All in all... they hurt.
