Has anyone actually started a manual car by pushing it or driving it down a hill?

Yup. And coincidentally I did it with a beetle too. I had to park on a hill for several days until payday when I could afford to get a new battery.

There was one time there were no hills so I had to pay a bum $5 to help me push start it. I could never get it started by myself because I'd lose too much speed when I jumped in to pop the clutch.

Many times... and many different cars, including a 71 Super Beetle.

1987 Toyota pickup. Many times. Also would lock my keys in the truck all tbe tjme, but that was easily remedied by just brute force prying the door open at the top and reaching in to unlock.

She wasnt the safest, but I loved her dearly. I have her to my dad when she had only 320,000km on her and he sent her to the junker shortly after. Tragic. She was just a teenager. Plenty of push-starts left in her.

Been a long time but yep, my old fiat only started that way

Age 51 and have driven a bunch of stick shifts, so yep. No Beetles, although my wife routinely did this with both her Beetles back in the day.

Many many times.

When I was really young, my dad used to pick up scrap metal and all that sort of stuff in his little mighty max truck. It would constantly need to be done, and always when it was filled with crap. It was very embarrassing to have to get out and push that shit-mobile. Never had to as an adult though.

I think so once upon a time. TS is also old LOL.

Many times. One of the many great reasons to drive a manual.
