Who would win this battle of the minds? The most brilliant criminal mind ever conceived versus the most brilliant detective ever conceived.

People forget Hannibal Lecter was not only one of the most brilliant fictional characters ever created, but the way his mind works was flat out scary. He also honed his senses to the point of being more animal than human. He could smell and identify what perfume clarice wore, even though she wasn't wearing it that day. He recreated detailed rennaissance paintings from memory. He talked a guy into swallowing his own tongue. He was polite, civilized and disarmingly charming, but this man also once bit off a nurse's tongue.

You do NOT want to engage in mind games with Dr. Hannibal Lecter. EVER. Unless, you are a man who enjoys and even thrives on playing mind games while constantly hoping to find an equal...a man whose mind works in a different way than normal human beings. A man who sees things no one else sees and therefore knows things no one else knows....a man who can run mental circles around anyone so easily that they have become bored and crave mental stimulus more than anything in life.....Mr. Sherlock Holmes.

This is a battle of wits. Lecter's killing people and Sherlock is put on the case to figure out who the murderer is. Due to Lecter having the advantage of living a century later, for this scenario I'll use the Benedict Cumberbatch modern version of Holmes.

Sherlock. If you've read the Thomas Harris books...

...Lecter isn't quite the mega-genius that he is in the movies. He is in possession of inside information that he just uses to make himself seem like a mind reader.

Wait, what? I've read the harris books, although not since the early 2000s. But i remember them going into detail about how he stored vivid memories in his memory palace in his mind. So he could recall anything he'd ever seen, heard or read. Stuff like that.

But in any case, for this scenario I'm using more the Anthony Hopkins movie version of Hannibal.

But you saying Sherlock would win is still completely acceptable. I can't even decide on a winner yet, it would be close, imo.

Sherlock Holmes would make Hannibal his bitch.

As i recall, graham got lucky in identifying lecter as the killer. I could be wrong though, it's been awhile since i read red dragon or watched the movie

Lucky like a fox. Dude put clues together and figured it out. Lecter had a book showing dissection that resembled one of the crimes (more or less as my memory is fuzzy).

Like a fox, huh? U making fun of my name? :)

But yeah that's what i was remembering. Wasn't graham not suspecting lecter at all? Then went to his home and noticed anatomy books and cooking books or something? That is dumb luck, imo. If that's even how it happened, I'm not sure i remember it right.

But sherlock on the other hand, he'd take one look at lecter and know, somehow. Interesting thing is hannibal would pick up on imperceptible facial cues sherlock would make as he pieced it together, and hannibal would know that sherlock knew. And sherlock would no doubt know that hannibal knew that he knew. And the game would be afoot :D

Is snooping around and noticing details really "dumb luck"?

Lecter wins this battle by murdering Holmes instead of playing mouse and cat.

No, i guess not. It would be more impressive if he'd suspected lecter before noticing those books. But again, i seriously might be remembering it completely wrong. But even if that's how it happened, it is still impressive.

He would never catch holmes off guard, imo. Holmes would ID lecter as a killer immediately. And holmes knew some sort of martial art and some stick fighting art, iirc. And i doubt holmes would be opposed to just shooting hannibal if he felt in danger. Although holmes would likely only wound lecter, since he would love the thrill of having a worthy opponent and might not want to kill him.

Then again, lecter might get in sherlock's head and mess him up. If anybody could, it would be lecter.

Lecter was undoubtedly extremely intelligent. But he played off his knowledge / memory of details from Buffalo Bill's actual files as brilliant speculation and insight.

At least, to the best of my recollection. It's been a while.

I guess Hannibal is no Moriarty.

Here's the closest thing I have to how this would actually play out.

Holmes "smells that cunt" and takes him out.

Fuck no. American to the core.

I phrased it that way to give the mouse more of the upper-hand. Legally speaking, Hannibal would be the mouse. But he'd be dictating the game so...

Ah, i wondered if that was how u meant that. But I've heard somewhere that phrasing it in that order is common in some country, i'm thinking it was england.

I was trying to be clever and sherlocky. Lol it didn't work :)
