Hey guys, quick question..

Has anyone noticed that training BJJ accelerates hair loss? With all the friction around the head, ect...

Iv'e been training BJJ for about 3 yrs now, I'm in my mid 30's and I have noticed that my hairline is receding at a quicker pace the past yr and a half than usual, still not that bad, but I can def. tell the difference.

I realize it is part of the aging process for most of us, but I do wear earguards while I roll (Thule) and I'm wondering if maybe the earguards straps are causing friction that is ripping hair out. It's really hard to tell whether to attribute to aging or BJJ.

Anyone had any issues with this? I ask because based on answers I may:

1. Change my earguards or wear them only when my ears are sore
2. Cut my hair shorter (not that it's that long now, im no Guida)

Thanks for any feedback...

I honestly don't think this has anything to do with BJJ.
Go for the Bruce Willis look if it bothers you...

dont feed the troll

With all due respect Chino.. I know i have a low post count, but it's not a Troll job..

I honestly would like other people's feedback... I never wrestled or did any sort of grappling until now and I have no idea whether headgear may cause hair loss, or grappling in general... most of the guys at my gym don't wear headgear and have cauli, so I can't ask them ...

hair loss is genetic, has nothing to do with grappling, wearing hats etc... with the exception being hair loss as a side effect to some sort of medical condition, if it's in your genes, it's coming out.

No. If anything, my hair has been growing it better since I've been training. I'm in a lot better shape though. Before I started training I was an extremely fat piece of shit.

I doubt training would increase a man's testosterone enough to trigger hair loss.

It's definitely not your head gear.

with enough friction on your head, you are going to lose some hair. it would take some serious friction to make you go bald though. you are probably losing hair due to genetic reasons, and the friction from bjj is just exacerbating it.

Rolling on the mat is probably making your hair shed a bit more than normal. If you have hair loss or a receding hairline, then the hair most likely isn't growing back as it should. The end result, more "hair loss."

For a person without that condition, the hair would simply grow back.

Save your hair by refusing to play from the bottom.

worst troll attempt ever...go do some pushups son

true. you will lose all of your hair because of bjj. just look at all of the top bjj guys competing today; some of them have been doing it almost all of their lives and have little to no hair on their heads. bjj also increases chest hair growth....so becareful. i didnt know about this and bam-i grew a carpet full of chest hair over night.

true story bro!

If this was true, i'd be rolling alot more. Girls like Bruce willis and Jason Statham, etc. Plus, did you know that in other animal species (like some primates for example) girls view the balding male as the choice mate because they are deemed more mature? I'd just go with it.

*looks around gym, sees everybody has a nasty receding hair line or none at all*

i think your on to something.

Don't think it has anything to do with that man...There are a lot of guys who have done BJJ for a looooong time and still have a full head of hair

Thanks guys...

I agree the hairline is just probably receding naturally:icon_neut... since no one had any major tragic headgear/hairloss stories :icon_chee Ill continue to wear them and just cut my hair shorter to minimize the friction on my head.

To those of you who called troll... perhaps you are younger chaps that have not had to face the "wonderful" things that happen to your body as you get older... but you will understand one day...

Thanks again for the replies....

@johnkreese - where do you train in NYC?

Gosh I sure hope not.

I have a receding hairline, but that started years ago so I can't blame rolling or headgear. Plus if it was the headgear causing hair loss, it would likely be only where your straps run.

My knees are one place where rolling/wrestling causes me to lose hair. During HS wrestling I wore all the hair off my knees. During college it all grew back, and since starting grappling it slowly been wearing off again. But that is usually accompanied with ingrown hairs as well. So unless you have ingrown hairs on your head, I'd say its safe to assume genetics as the culprit.

Hitting middle age, and your hair loss is accelerating. Hmmm... must be the grappling!
