Hi guys, very new here, and very new to Grappling. I've had a search through the forum but can't find advice on this.

I have recently started BJJ and get a bit of skin irritation around my jaw line from chokes. It feels like it's from my facial hair being rubbed against my face, does anyone get this, and is there a way to reduce the irritation with creams or by changing the time of day I shave around trainings... any thoughts?

I realise I should probably avoid being choked so much, but at this stage it's not up to me...

Thanks

Make sure you dont have impetigo or something like that. Dont shave close in time before or after grappling since it compromises the integrity of the skin and makes you more susceptible to infection and other funky stuff.

a lot of guys at my place smear vaseline on their face before sparring to reduce irritation

man up

also, listen to that one dude - don't shave close to training if you can help it

Thanks guys, give those a try... probably have to give that "manning up" a try, do you know where I can buy some?

Thanks for the advice guys,

will have to try some of that "manning up" too.

I agree with those that say don't shave too close to training time.

Your skin will also get tougher naturally. When I fist started, i'd get mat burn on my feet and my knees would get rubbed raw from kneeling in guard in the gi pants. Nothing like that happens anymore. You will adapt in time.

shaving is for sissies. Be a man, grow a beard.

Of course this will become EXTREMELY irritated from chokes...
so I guess I'm just an ass

+1

I had the same problem, and your skin does get thicker after a while. It's weird. After getting back on the mat after time off, I immediately get mat burn on the top of my feet.

My only advice is to not shave just before practice, but also to try and shave often enough to not let your scruff get too long. Eventually the irritation won't be as bad.

the only ass move here is getting choke out whilst having a beard

disgraceful

Yea I try not to shave the day or the day before I grapple. Which has been easy this summer cause I've only been training twice a week. Normally it's hard to do.

I agree with Frank Stallone. unreal av pic. you'll develop minimal calluses on the places (fingers, hands, feet, knees, etc.) and won't burn as bad. Still get them every now and again. Also, the number of times someone has your back and is choking you should eventually decrease... hopefully.

I am a pharmacist so I know what Im talking about :icon_chee. If it is really bad, you can use some hydrocortisone cream. Also for irritation nothing works like good old fasioned Desitin. If you need any other advice feel free to PM me.

I find that, as a rule of thumb, train, shower, shave, alcohol (aftershave or even just alcohol hand gel) is the best strategy for me. You could give that a try. To be honest, though, even if I do this I still get huge spots and shit from time to time. But I don't grapple to look pretty.

Also try shaving with room temp water instead of hot water. Hot water opens your pores and increases razor irritation and ingrown hairs. If that doesnt work go electric.
