Several People try to claim that BJJ and GJJ are the same, but they are not. They are the same concept of jiu jitsu, but far from being the same. Anyone like to add to this?

Yes, they are different in the sense that GJJ is technically BJJ, but BJJ is not necessarily GJJ. GJJ is specifically the self-defense curriculum created by Helio Gracie and now taught in the Gracie Academy.

BJJ is everything that evolved from that, from Carlos Gracie's jiu-jitsu line, and every other line of jiu-jitsu originating from Maeda in Brazil.

The "Gracies" reformed the techniques of Judo and Japanese JuJutsu in "Brazil," so yes, they are essentially the same. However, nowadays, the sport aspect of the game that has evolved since is "Brazilian Jiu Jitsu," while "Gracie Jiu Jitsu" is more based on self defense, as well as standup techniques and fighting techniques. I think the discrepany is silly, but they are at this point different things.

Not it's not silly at all. Its true. For further proof check out Whorian Gracie's Jiu-Jitsu curriculum...

Gracie JJ is a trademarked brand. BJJ is the generic term that also embraces GJJ.

It's the same thing, just taught differently and with different emphasis. I emphasize "emphasis", which just means that certain areas are focused on more than others, but at the end of the day you'll have learned essentially the same stuff. A black belt in "GJJ" knows the same thing that a black belt in "BJJ" knows.

I find the comparison stupid to be honest. Would you say you were a GJJ black belt? No...you'd say you were a BJJ black belt.

The cirrcullum that helio and rorian gracie have created is amazing and does work in street fight scenarios... Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is good for sport, but Gracie is good for street. As gracie academy has created a cirrcullum where there one and only purpose is to show you how to apply every technique in a street fight without putting yourself at risk for strikes. The whole cirrcullum is designed for street fighting, not competition. the primary focus to blue belt is to learn how to win a fight using the techniques without getting striked.

GJJ is good for the street because it is BJJ and BJJ roll

or are you saying that the actual techniques are anything spectacular?

Okay, but you fail in your assumptions. Most BJJ schools do teach a self-defense curriculum also... msny of those self-defense curriculums are the one originated by Helio

Also Gracie Academy does teach some competition stuff, though it isn't their primary focus.

With that said, sport BJJ is mainly used as a part of mixed martial arts training these days. And sport mixed martial arts is very effective for self-defense all on it;s own, but when you combine it with the self defense training it leaves you at a great advantage

So I know Helio complained about how time limits and refs and points are all fake and how he always fought without rules or time limits, but are we seriously supposed to believe that challenge matches where he lays in guard for 4 hours are really representative of "self defense"?

those are a lot of bjj techniques, but most of those techniques werent put into the cirrcullum for street self defense that gracie academy has made up. Now i saw some of those techniques that are used in the cirrcullum, but most of them arent used in the cirrcullum. I am only a blue belt in gracie jiu jitsu right now, so idk if they are used further up the cirrcullum in the master cycle or not, but up to blue belt only a few of those techniques were used to be applied in a real street fight.

I'll be training with them this Saturday hopefully!

They market as GJJ but them seem to bring home alot of competition trophies, so im not sure about the competition thing the above poster was talking about.

that's because according to the Gracie Academy website they don't do Gracie Jiu-Jitsu™, they do Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

you're an idiot. In the Migs Bros video was basically the entire Gracie Jiu-Jitsu self defense curriculum as taught by Relson Gracie; minus the weapons stuff.
