Just had a look through the IBJJF rules (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) and can't see anything on the weight allowance you get to account for weighing in with a gi on.

It is my understanding that you weigh in with your gi on and they take off 3kg to account for the gi.

i.e. if you are in the under 79kg division you can weigh up to 82kg with the gi on.

Can anyone see anything in the IBJJF rules about this or confirm what the conventional rule is?

Cheers

I thought that weight was already built into the weight classes.

The weight you have meet is with your gi on, don't matter if your gi is lbs 2 or 20.

I think you made up those rules yourself. The weight limits published are what you have to make with the gi, no weight allowance, no second chance to weigh in.

You weigh in with the Gi. They subtract nothing.

If your weight class is 79 KG and you weigh in with the Gi at 79.1 KG you are DQ'd.

So if your Gi weighs 3 KG, you better weigh under 76KG without the Gi to make sure your total weight is under 79 KG including the Gi.

They used to have a weight class then an allowance for the gi, but since they weighed you in wearing it anyway they stopped doing that and made it a single number for the whole weight of you plus your kit.

This is not like MMA or Muay Thai where you get a weight variation. You must make weight with the gi on. I have never heard of any weight allowance for a gi. Plus different gis have different weights.

I have done 4 competitions. All of the ones say your weight with the gi on with no subtractions

I have heard of some tournaments that have fudged the rules.

But no tournament that is recognized by the IBJJF will ever fudge the rules.

We had a competitor get DQ'd for 3 ounces over. No second chance, no let me remove this article of clothing under the gi...Done, Gone, DQ'd thanks for paying (not playing obviously).

They have test scales, people should def know ahead of time.

There is no gi allowance.

Not wanting to disagree with the great hillary, and i can only speak from my limited experience in Australia

Heavyweight here is listed as 97kg or 100.5kg with the gi.....has been this way at every IBJJF tourney i've been too.

The weights listed on the IBJJF sites are meant for either gi or nogi competitions. The lighter is the weight you are to make in your complete nogi uniform at nogi tournaments, the heavier the weight you must make wearing a gi.

Either I'm confused about the question, or I...yeah, I must be confused.

i haven't ever been to the pan ams or any huge tournaments. but at the us open in northern california you have to weigh in before the match with your gi on. if you are over you don't compete.
this thread is just going to confuse people.

Yea its meet the weight or get dq'd. I personally think that they should do weigh ins without the gi but i dont make the rules!
