I'm slowly getting used to it, but it does still hinder my performance somewhat. I've always been a mouth breather and breathing through the nose is not natural for me.

Anyone else have problems with mouthguards ?

I did until I was forced to wear one for practice and conditioning, etc. Now it just feels wrong not to have it in.

as soon as you walk into the gym, put it in. run with it and do almost all your training with it. you'll get used to wearing it. also, when you mold it, DO NOT bite it, even lightly. use your tongue to push it to the roof of your mouth and use your fingers to mold it over your teeth. that way it will mold securely and it won't fall out if your mouth does open.

"Learn the best skills and give the best effort because winning has nothing to do with luck!"

I used to gag every time I put a mouth guard in. Never had any breathing or conditioning problems due to a mouthguard though.

I'd seriously recommend going over to a dentists and shell out $30 for a custom mouthguard. They're worth every penny.

yes i had the same problem as you yesterday lol

I used to use one of those brain pad ones that covers your upper and lower teeth and has a hole so you can breathe through your mouth. I used regular mouthpieces in high school sports, but I definitely like the larger one for sparring.

I've got a double(upper and Lower) Brainpad also. It was $19.99 from Everlasts website . Worth every penny. I had one of those cheaper $5.99 variety you get at a Sporting Goods store and the Brainpad is light years better. The breathing hole in the middle makes real easy to breath through your mouth. I'm like you pretty much always breath though my mouth and its real easy to breath even when I am totally gassed. I pretty much put mine as soon as walk throught doors and leave it in till I'm done.

Get a custom one from opro.com or another site. Costs roughly 60 bucks, is professionally molded, you can choose colors and patterns, and best of all it doesn't fall out of your mouth. You can breath and talk(!!!!!) with that thing in your mouth because it fits your gums and teeth very snug.

I'm a mouthbreather too (the result of two broken noses when I was young), but I've found that with a well fitting mouthguard I have no problems breathing (or drinking). Are you wearing a double? If so, toss it and get a single.

I recently purchased a custom mouthguard from Smartguards here in Canada for a great price and will be posting a review very soon. Depending on where you live, you'll pay between $50-85 for a custom one and you won't be sorry...

Thanks for the link. It looks like a good mouthguard for $20.

Hey Guys price correction
Smartguards full kits, are 100cdn/100us. That includes any 1-3 color guard with logo, name and a case. The $100 is covers pretty well everything other than the small fee of shipping the impression back to me. Heavey duty designs may cost a little more as well. Any design is obtainable.
Thanks...

I am training a few years and I still am not used to the mouth guard, i hate it, but it is needed when sparing!!!!

I really like mine. I can't say if the customs one are that much better. There are a couple othreads in the Equipment and gear forum about mouthpieces. Some people swear by the custom ones and others say they are no better just more expensive than the Brainpads and other comparable boil and bites.

I don't like the singles. Latter in a training session I get really tired and and with only a single, your lower jaw is not firmly planted(if your a mouth breather) and if you get caught even with a light blow( because I have) with your mouth open you really feel it. With a double (that has a good breathing passage) you pop it in and even when your tired and breathing through your mouth I still have support for both my upper and lower jaw.

Another side benefit I've noticed is that its harder for my opponent to tell when I'm really that tired. Because its not like suddenly they can see my drop and I'm sucking in air because my mouth position stays the same from beginning to end.
