I checked his webpage because of the thread about the westside tournament. I checked his diary entries because his old website had some English entries but found that I had to get the Japanese translated instead (Chrome did it automatically after a prompt!).
He got his BB from Watanabe Yoshinao of Triforce. Hopefully someone who speaks Japanese can double check this was translated correctly. I emailed a Japanese speaker friend of mine to be sure and I'll no doubt know soon.

The most entertaining fighter in MMA. Awesome grappler too.

I hope to one day earn my black belt in dancing from Genki.

I'm only a blue belt in sexy under Yoshihiro Akiyama. I want to start cross-training in Genki-Dancing, but I'm afraid it'll mess with my routine too much.

genki, damn good grappler. i hope to train with him too

does he have a gym nowadays? what's he doing nowadays anyway?

He coaches the Takushoku University wrestling team. The position is quite a big deal apparently, that uni is legendary for their martial arts clubs.

He is also on TV a lot and writes books. I think he stills makes bank mostly just because he still has a lot of celebrity presence (for a retired MMA fighter anyhow) in Japan.

Guys thanks for the video links and information.. But damn, he's really quite young to quit the industry. Hope to see him compete at some gi /nogi.

Damn, am I the only one who thought he already was a bb?

He is still training.
He said he would NEVER stop training.
And he also said he'd never compete again because of neck injuries.
:(

I never heard he had neck injuries but I just googled and several MMA news sites said that in a later news conference after announcing his retirement that is just what he said.

i remember watching an old video of genki tearing shit up in a nogi grappling competition here in the US. pretty epic.
