What a warrior for hanging in there after 2 eyepokes and a nut shot, and about a billion punches to the face. The guy is tough as nails and has no quit in him.

However, his striking looked horrible. The only good thing he did was his jab. But that right hand slap-punch sucks and he kept throwing it. Poor defense, no combinations... But ok, striking isn't his thing. He's known for his grappling, right?

Except his grappling looked like dogshit as well. Couldn't get a takedown to save his life. And on the few occasions where they did end up on the ground, Gaethje always got the dominant position, landed some punches and then stood up. Paddy couldn't even hold him there long enough to work a sweep or something.

You didn't notice these frailties in 90% of his UFC career ?

Sherdog presented him as a world class chain wrestler after his fight with Chandler..when in reality he's always been a decent BJJ practitioner with horrendous defense.

With the worst run to a interim title shot in the divisions history.

Actually this was the first time I watched a Paddy fight. I just never had any interest in him before.
Same lmao. When I saw he got chandler I was like shit now I have to watch him

Dude proved he’s tough as nails but the criticisms and doubts he’s faced were proven correct. He’s extremely hittable and doesn’t have reliable ways of getting the fight to the floor where he truly excels.

I don’t want to totally trash the guy because he’s better than I initially gave him credit for. But he had a very favorable path to the top and finally his clear deficiencies came back to bite him when he didn’t have a super favorable match up.

He needs to go to tiger my Thai & tighten his striking similar to Yan. Paddy strikes like Rhonda.

He was scared and overly excited. That ruined his technique. The upercut and knee were clean. But didn't land. JG was relaxed and mowed him down. Difference between a killer and a brawler.

He looked sharp vs Chandler. He got shook here. Reverted to the ugliest striking and posture.

No this was actually an extremely favorable match up. He had every advantage coming int this. And in spite of how badly he lost and how horrible he is skill wise, there were multiple opportunities for him to finish Gaethje in this fight. …Gaethje was out of stamina and hurt after the first round. Paddy is just that bad.

Not a fan of paddy but he landed a lot of strikes on gaethje so it's hard to say his striking was horrible. He did some sloppy looking stuff like that slap punch but he did other things well like his jab, kicks and knees.

His jiu jitsu is good to elite if he can implement it. Problem is he has to get the fight there. His take downs/wrestling aren’t great. His striking isn’t technical. I like his jab and he should have been pumping that in the fight. He need to throw combos more often too. But yeah problem with fighting a guy like Justin is you have to strike and move quickly or you will be on the opposite end of one of his heavy shots. And we saw paddy face after the fight he got hit many times with throws heavy shots. Shows a great chin but his striking defense isn’t good. A more technical striking fighter like ilia or max are putting a striking clinic on him in a standup fight and his face will look even worse or he will get put down. I know paddy is dedicated to his hometown, but it would be cool to see him train at like American top team for a year. I think he could become a much better fighter.

He had his moments. This was sort of his first real test. Give him some time, he's got heart and never showed any quit.
Keep putting him with top contenders and he'll either grow to be even better or sink to the prelims.

I guess I should clarify, this was definitely the easiest top 5 fight they could give him. And it was yet another fighter over 35. It was as favorable as it could be for him given the circumstances. But it was still the toughest fight he’s been given by far regardless.

Pretty stupid to have your hands down against Gaethje right from the jump.

Guy was fighting like Bobby Green.

Disappointed in Paddy. Such a low IQ fighter.

I don’t know. I would give him the tough as nails thing. But I can’t say I didn’t see any quit in him, especially in the beginning. He went down without the punches wobbling his legs or throwing off his equilibrium which means it was voluntary.

Gaethje is probably the most primitive striker to ever reach the top level of this division. Paddy learned how to throw a jab in the middle of the fight and started to land it to set up his two pretty well. But Gaethje was too dumb to be frustrated by it.
It’s funny because Paddy proved his chin comment to be true. But only because Gaethje is too basic to catch even a novice like Paddy when he isn’t expecting it. A good chin works when you can anticipate the punches. But fighters like Topuria or Tsarukyan would put him to sleep because he wouldn’t see the punches coming.

Bobby Green without ANY of the head movement which is all Bobby Green has to defend himself.
