Looks more like a scab formed from a drained carbuncle to me. Ingrown hairs might form a boil or pimple, but wouldn't leave a scab that size. And, of course, staph bacteria can cause carbuncles too.

Certainly could be the result of an ingrown hair. The ingrown hair on its own won't do it, but they can get very painful and itchy, non-staph infected, then people scratch or pick them open, and then something along those lines happens. Rarely quite that bad, bad it's well within the range of plausible.

Of course if could be an ingrown hair that was scratched open and then infected by staph.

I dealt with staph long ago, a few years before you started hearing about it in MMA and other sports. I had a few nasty boils on the back of my neck. A few people told me "that must be an ingrown hair." I wish that's all they were.

And as others have said, it could be an ingrown hair AND staph.
