So, as Im prone to do now and then is after so many years check out what the mod community has done for specific games, Bethesda games especially. I checked out Fallout 4 couple years ago and there was some cool stuff, but nothing incredible. I came across a YouTuber who had a step by step tutorial on how to get Fallout 4 looking great even in 2022, and I was legitimately impressed with the results. Its a combination of texture overhauls and ENB settings. I fooled around with it and ended up taking a few alternate settings but theres so much variety out there you can get it looking however you want.

One of the more impressive comparisons is this:

This is the vanilla, unmodded, version of the secretary in Nick Valentines office:

This is my screenshot after modding it up. Same character, same conversation, same location. Its even the same painting behind her:

You can click on the screens I post for a full sized look. The comparison is insane

Im playing the game again and Im literally awestruck at some of the things I see. Its hard to get a screenshot that gives the full impression, but everything from the textures to the lighting is modded up. I even opted to put in some vegetation because I figured I'd seen the brown barren wastes enough times. But you can still get it retextured in the same style, or even add sparse vegetation. Some of the screens I took look more like a Stalker or Metro game than Bethesdas creaky Fallout 4, and they even take advantage of raytracing if you have the card for it

Some of your old faves have gotten retextures as well:

Check out stuff in the backgrounds of the pics too. All of it gets retextured. From the desks to the items to the fallout statue.

This is another one for a god comparison. Our old nemesis Kellog.

Vanilla version:

And this is my modded all to fuck version (again, I tried to get the same conversation/angle lined up). He obviously looks better, but also check out all the other details. His clothing, the metal of his shoulder armor. It all looks fantastic, and with the new ENB lighting presets its hard to capture the feeling of it. Theres light rays from all sorts of different angles, dust motes, etc.:

Walking around the city is an entirely new aesthetic. I added up new weapons and such too. Some of your old haunts will looks startling good even in 2022.

You can even give Dogmeat one floppy ear because ITS SO GODDAMN CUTE

The lighting is improved significantly and everything just looks modern and has been improived so drastically its hard to put into words. Looks like one of the remakes that are coming out nowadays

This is the guy who did the tutorial. Its lengthy, but its step by step and hard to screw up if you have the patience. The vid is from his fully modded version. Like I said, I made a few adjustments so mine looks a bit different but you can see the improvement, and you can tailor it to your personal tastes.

He also has a tutorial for getting Skyrim looking amazing even in 2022. THAT mod list is way more extensive, but the results are incredible.

Yowza. Guess the mod scene is practically non-existent on sherdog.

I guess I know how Im spending the next few weeks.

Fallout 4 is ridiculously easy to mod. I removed all the mods I had created from the Nexus a few weeks ago. A few of them are still around in collaboration mods though. I spend to long adding mods to the game nowadays that by the time I'm finished I can't play cause I then decide to tweak something else.

I don't care about that new star galaxy shit they're making. I want Fallout 5. or a new Skyrim.

Well, the new Elder Scrolls is coming after Starfield, so theres that.

Damn Skyrim looks amazing. But I know it would be ruined the moment I saw everyone walking. I can't believe Bethesda just can't get the human gait down.

Do you have Vortex-- the latest and greatest mod installation manager for Nexus? Fallout 4 is a supported game.

Vortex is the GOAT mod manager. Automates all of the conflict managements. Absolute godsend.

I've used it, the issue I have is I don't wanna pay for the higher download speeds and it takes me 46 years to download all my mods, Hell it took me an hour to download a mod I made lmao

You can still download the mods separately, and then upload them into Vortex manually. Down in the "Mods" submenu along the left Menu column of Vortex, you'll see "Install from File". That's how you add them.

I'm only a PS4 guy but I need to give Fallout 4 a chance. I started it and didn't get very far.....just didn't like the flavor it had compared to FO3 and NV, but I'm sure there's fun to be had once you set that aside.

I used Mod Manager 2. Haven't really gone deep into modding anything for years. What's the difference between vortex and MM2?

And there's something called wabbajack now?

I was enjoying it. The story actually seemed good to me as well. My only issue is the game bugged out on me and no matter how far back I went in my save I couldn't get the main story to continue. The girl I needed to talk to would only sell me stuff.

Vortex dumbs everything down. That's the entire point of a mod manager. I don't want a mod manager that requires me to "know what I'm doing". That's the whole point of leaving manual management behind, or mod managers that are actually just neutral installers of mods. I got sick of spending 10x as much time reading about how to use mods, and their compatibilities with other mods/DLC, then I did trying out the mods themselves.

The principal advantage of Vortex is that it uses a rule set for installation/load order. It figures out on its own which order to install mods in so there aren't conflicts, but it still gives you elective choice over this if there are specific exceptions you want/need to make. This includes only doing partial installations of the mods in question if you don't want the whole shebang integrated. Like MM2, it can uninstall them, one at a time, and this voids the ridiculously complex and precarious task of uninstalling just one mod when you had to follow a massive set of linear steps to install it at the same time you were installing a dozen or more other mods, and couldn't possibly extract just one mod by itself manually.

Above all, though, Vortex is for more than just 7 Bethesda games. I wish the list of supported games for Vortex was larger than it is, but 228 > 7.

Skyrim and Fallout 4 are kept alive by the modding community; I can still go back and play them and have fun, though I do have to spend a few hours putting together the mods necessary.

Skyrim VR and Fallout 4 VR are incredibly improved by the modding community. As they have been originally released they are a fairly poor implementation of VR tech, but with mods they approach HL: Alyx level of interaction. It completely revamps the experience and it's mind blowing - if you have the hours of time to get it right.

The Stalker games were another series that benefitted hugely from modding (First and foremost for correcting loads of bugs). There were countless individual mods but also multiple complete overhauls of the games that improved just about everything while adding completely new gameplay mechanics and storylines. The most impressive for me was Stalker Anomaly, which combined content from all three games into one single super-Zone where you could play as any faction, even the military. As someone who was crazy about the game back when it was released it's amazing how far the community carried it and improved it

The best parts of Fallout 4 are all the elements that have nothing to do with finding your kid.

There's this high rise building where you can get leg attachments that let you fall from any height. It's on a really high floor that requires a jetpack. You can also glitch up the elevator shaft. They are inside a safe.

When you get in the office room, you see a bunch of empty bottles of booze, Cola, water, food packages and a skeleton. There's a terminal/diary of the person who got stuck up there after the bombs fell.

The dead person invented the leg attachments, but forgot the code to the safe. He wound up starving to death.

There are so many cool stories like that.

That’s good. Honestly I didn’t think it was a very good looking game in its vanilla form when it came out. I also just didn’t think it was a very good game in general either.

Thanks for posting. Looks like you put some effort into that and your OP, good work, looks good.
