Do you guys know about this or him? I'm not a huge racing fan, but decided to watch Senna tonight and it was pretty good. So, I Googled things about him and crashes came up.

This guy, Frederick Jansen Van Vuuren, was a Marshal at a F1 race in the 70's (1977, I believe) and there was a car catching on fire on the side of the road, so he ran across the track with the drivers still racing with a fire extinguisher. Long story short, I guess the cars were coming over a hill, and one of the drivers hit him dead on at full speed. He, was absolutely obliterated and the extinguisher he was carrying bounced off the driver's head that him and he was instantly killed him too. The extinguisher actually went clear over the stands and into the parking lot behind the stands. Crazy, crazy accident. The Marshal who died was only identified after they called all the Marshals to see who was missing.

I'm not posting any material... it's a bit too much.

Yeah, that is about the number of replies I expected on this topic. Formula One racing is just not popular in the U.S. I used to be a huge Ayrton Senna fan until he passed away in 1994. I met his sister and Niki Lauda in Brazil. You will probably enjoy the movie "Rush", 2013. The 1970s rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda. The Marshal you mentioned was relatively young and those cars do go by extremely fast. Senna himself almost got run over in this 1992 accident at the Belgium GP:

The great 'four' of F1 (Senna, Prost, Mansell, Piquet):

Yeah, I don't mind F1. Can't stand NASCAR though.

This was a very special memory for Senna and all of Brazil when he first started to raise the Brazilian flag after winning a race. Drivers were not allowed to do that at the time but Senna did not care. The flag was given to him from a fan, later he started to carry his own flag in the car. Detroit GP 1986 - 2:03 on the video:

Interview regarding the incident. This is my favorite memory of Ayrton Senna:

No. He remained in one piece. Read the link on post #13.

Apparently it was just his pants coming off. He wasn’t ripped in half.

Yeah that was a bad one.
Lots of deaths in f-1, and the lower classes at that.
A couple weeks ago another young prospect crashed and died (hubert).

I was like 10 when Senna died, and then they stilled showed things like that on tv. I was messed up the whole day seeing him crash that wall (where a day before another guy crashed into his death also) He was such a great guy and racer. The senna documentary brought a tear to my eyes. He knew he would die that day, and he was in peace with it due to God.

Now we have Max! He is awesome.
