The reason I ask is quite a few people were picking Chandler. He went 5 rounds with Oliveira less than 5 months before he fought Paddy--something no fighter had ever done. Many were picking Chandler due to experience and the fact he hurt/stunned everyone he fought before Paddy.

But as soon as Paddy won, the consensus became "Chandler has been washed for years. That was a meaningless win."

For the record, Gaethe is 37 and almost everyone agrees he peaked a few years ago. However, he has only lost to champs, either the current one (Khabib, Oliveira), former ones (Eddie Alvarez, Max) or a future one (Poirier). He's also beaten a pretty solid fighter in Fiziev twice in the last few years.

This is the kind of confidence some have in Gaethje.

Its whatever, theres a serious lack of fresh talent in the UFC and Paddy has fed entirely on the Greens, Ferguson, Chandler, Gaethjes. This product has gotten pretty miserable. LW is supposed to he the deepest division lol.

This is a cool fight, if Gaethje wins we get a terrible title fight. If Paddy wins its at least interesting.

I agree. Ilia has proven he can beat older strikers who have slowed down like 4 times now. Sure, it's a lot better than Paddy's resume, but Emmett is 40, Volk is 37, Charles is 36 and both Charles/Max have tons of mileage from being in the UFC since they were like 20.

Gaethje is just another slight variation of that group. Paddy is at least young, in his prime and has a completely different style and skillset.

I think it will depend on the fight.

If it's a good war and Paddy wins, he'll receive some credit.

If he finishes Justin in the first rounds people will just throw Justin in the same washed up bin as Ferguson, Green and Chandler.

Hey wassup - since you addressed this thread to me im happy to take this question.

Yeah I mean its his highest quality win but I think for me to consider him an elite 155er hed probably need 1 more additional quality win especially depending on method of victory. Now if he goes in and does a flying sub and gets em in round 1? or a crazy fuckin head kick or something yeah boy your in, your one of the fellas now. But if its some corny ass decision he squeaked by, being debated on sherdog over who actually won, or its a weird ass stoppage.....nah man you definitely gotto go earn it earn it.

I think for most guys we want to see 3-4 fights in the top 10 before theres really a consensus opinion on their quality. But if hes steamrolling people then ay, it is what it is baby

I'll give him credit. Gaethje is a solid win, even if a few years past his best before date.

We gotta stop tearing these boys down when they're on the come up.

Great question … if he’s as good as some people think he is ( I don’t think he is ) he should beat gaethje (odds reflect that ) .. while I would give him credit for sure I wouldn’t be impressed or consider him a champ especially.. I think Arman or Topuria would be way too much for him … unless he just mows gaethje down makes it look easy then yeah I’d be impressed

Yes because i dont think Justin is gonna fall off a cliff like Green or Chandler did, both of them had been looking washed and then looked extra awful vs paddy, gaethje doesnt look past it despite his age.

It will be Paddy's biggest win *by far* if he pulls it off...and he will deserve respect. On the downturn, over the hill at 37, whatever...Justin is still a top fighter.

Despite the retirement threats earlier (and my belief that he will retire if he loses to Paddy), I have to believe Justin *so* badly wants the title that we're going to get the best possible version of him at this stage of his career...so Paddy is surely facing his biggest challenge to date and a win would be impressive, even if Justin if a bit removed from his prime.

If Paddy outstrikes or outwrestles Gaethje, then yeah.
If he gets a submission, not really because Gaethje has no ground game.

Gaethje is past his prime but he is still very good and that was shown in the Fiziev fights.

Impressive is pushing it. Will be his best win, and a very good one, but he'd have to straight up run through him. I put a small bet on Gaethje just because he's a decent underdog in what I consider a 50/50 fight, but I wouldn't bet anything I wasn't willing to lose.

I'd be impressed with a submission as well. Justin isn't very good on the ground, but he's only been submitted 2 times in 31 fights....by two of the best grapplers in LW history (Khabib and Oliveira). Others, like Chandler and one of his WSOF opponents, tried to take him down and finish him, but couldn't.
