Wassup guys, I train NO-GI and GI BJJ at my school, a day or so after my last class, last thursday, i had a breakout on my arm and chin, at first i thought it was a mosquito bite then it got worse, I went to the doctor and he said i have a form of staph and prescribed me Bactroban Cream (Topical Antibiotic)

Is there anything i should be worried about? good thing i caught it early i guess, have any of you guys experienced this? I had ringworm a month or two ago on my leg as well, I take a shower before and after class and still seem to pick-up this stuff, Maybe my club doesn't wash the mats good enough, or it could of been someone i was rolling with?

I get this now and then. Get a decent exfoliant scrub and shower after training or as soon as you get home. Don't shave as regularly, paticularly not if you are going training that evening. Wash your gis. Motherfuckers with stinky gis are also not going to help matters if they are rubbing their stinky ass threads all over your face so perhaps inform your instructor and if a dude has a gi that attracts flies perhaps asked to be paired up with someone else. They might feel "Oh he's scared of me" and it will boost their ego while you get to avoid further skin oirritation.

ok a few points i picked up:

1) Do not exfoliate before u go to class. remvoing a layer of skin removes a layer of protection against bacteria.

2) Wash as soon as you get home. if u are doing so and still getting this shit try to have a shower a tthe gym.

I also had this before. It is easily treatable by early generation antibiotics. Nowadays I use anti-bacterial soap (w/triclosan) during my post-training showers. It hasn't ever come back since I started doing this.

thanks, i just picked up some anti bacterial soap, hopefully it goes away in a few days

I had Staph and almost lost a toe. Now it's just weird looking. Doctor put me on levequin (sp?) and it cleared right up though. Now I scrub like a maniac every time as soon as I get home.

Just comes witht he territory man.. Try to keep your self clean.. Try to keep the mats clean.

Really all you can do. The stuff will still pop up ever now and again.. but thats because human beings are disgusting.

About two years ago, I started getting boils real bad. I looked up some shit on the Internet about it and they really aren't treatable, you just have to wait it out. They suck shit.

Oh yeah, the point of this post was that I was rolling with someone nasty, which is why I kept getting the infections.

Your instructor should be mopping the matts with a bleach solution after every rolling class. I am going to get on our instructor cause it don't happen enough. Especially in hte basement wehre we do MMA. I don't want anything on me.

Clean your self as best as you can after rolling/training . I carrie a bottle of Purell . Also try not to rub your eyes or face with your hands while working out . a friend of mine got staph infection on his hand , it started out like a pimple ( he picked at it ) and then it got worse . He ended up in the E.R , his hand started to split open ( it opened up 4 to 5 inches long ) . The Doctors kept him their for a week . I'll try and get the picture of his hand and post it .

Please don't. I think most are are willing to take your word.

Most people have staph and just don't realise it because it displays no symptoms. I got folliclitis from BJJ too. I got given the same stuff. It just comes and goes. Not alot you can do really. I'm tired of applying the cream so unless its in an obvious place like my face, I probably won't do it again. The price of training....

Best I can offer:
1) Show after training.
2) Scrub lots and scrub often
3) Wash your gis after every session
4) Use the anti bacterial wash on your gi too to prevent ringworm.
5) Find out how often they wash down the mats where you train.

Out of curiosity, how often is it done where you guys train?

You generally gave good advice. I just want to correct some misconceptions in your post. Ringworm is a fungal infection. Anti-bacterial soap and antibiotics have NO EFFECT ON IT. You need to use an anti-fungal agent on ringworm.

Staph bacteria is present all around us. It's present in the nasal passages of many people. It is not a constant infection (i.e. herpes) that stays in your system. However, due to its ubiquitous presence, you are always in constant danger of infection.

I'm not sure how often they clean the mats, I've seen them mop it down once after class, i need to ask.

I use a salt scrub after each class. This works great for me. It is a little expensive, about $40 a container, you can buy it at a day spa.
