Hey all you non-clipping SOBs! Clip your fingernails! And your toenails! I shouldn't come out of training looking like I got in a fight with a bobcat of some sort.

Once every other week or so isn't good enough. Good rule of thumb is if you can scratch yourself than they are too long and they have BEEN too long. This should be part of your checklist along with your shower everyday.

Thank you!

PS. Yes you should shower every day and wash your gi after every use.

don't forget the belt too!

Couldn't agree more about the fingernails. Disgusting mother f'ers.

Well, this was a productive thread. Telling people that are into jiu jitsu enough to post on a jiu jitsu message board about training etiquette, instead of focusing your attention on the training partner that scratched you. Is your next post going to be about the merit of flushing a toilet after using it?

I trim my nails every 2 days, keep them short.

I always get a few cuts from other people, its kind of disgusting and its really annoying having a cut on your finger. missing a chunk out of my middle finger at the moment from a guy not cutting his nails

This seems more like an entry for a diary. Didn't really need a thread.

it does actually need to be a thread, too many people don't cut there nails for training, even toe nails. I've seen people who look like they are trying to do a Sabretooth cosplay

Eh, it's debatable. One thread won't stem the tide of hygienically questionable jiujitseros.

We all need a place to vent to sympathetic ears though, and this place is as good as any. Better, considering the shared community. My apologies if I sounded insulting.

PS. Everyone please flush the toilets after using them at the gym! And use the urinals for pissing, don't pee all over the toilet seats! Glad someone pointed this out, almost forgot. haha

Holy shit, I could not agree more with the TS. If you're rolling with someone, make sure you have trimmed nails, I don't wanna walk away bleeding after rolling, it's annoying and disgusting. Not just for you, but since blood can get on the mats then other people roll there and those are problems you don't need. Toenails too, last week I took some guy down in wrestling and he brought his leg up and his toenails slashed into my leg on the way down. I didn't notice til I got up and my friend asked me why my leg was bleeding.

you didn't sound insulting at all, some people just need to be reminded they have small little razors on the end of fingers

It's when the razors turn brown or green that I really try to keep my distance.

lets add something to this thread, how many scars do you have on your hands from these bastards?
right hand - 8 left hand - 6
maybe mine are more noticable because im super white

do you dorks realize that your fresh cut nails are actually sharper than my long but worn down fingernails?

Do you realise that when something is longer it has a chance of catching onto things like skin, but when they are short and actually don't stick out further than the end of your finger you are less likely to scratch someone?

it's also more hygienic..

I don't even know what you nubz are talking about. I have never been scratched in wrestling, judo, or bjj bad enough to complain about it on sherdog. All I'm saying is that cutting your nails creates a fresh edge, making them even sharper. Either way, it doesn't bother me.

Wait, are you guys mostly rolling with girls?:icon_twis

As an tourament official, I had to tell a competitor to go and cut his nails before he gets on the mats. pity his training partner.

i agree. i hate motherfuckers with long nails and you usually don't even know you rolled with one until you get into the shower and the scratches start stinging like crazy.

on a semi-related note: bj penn always has really long fingernails. watch his RVCA commercial as they're wrapping his hands. it's crazy that a guy that has spent so much time on the mat and got to such a high level in bjj would have nails like that, ever!

You should also accept that your hair isn't so important that you need to gel it and not expect it to run into your eyes and that of your training partner, although it did once force me into a kimura even though I'd never been successful with it before.
